Ullmannwasthesonofadoctor.HeattendedtheclassicallanguagesschoolinHornandstudiedlawat
ViennaandInnsbruck.HavinganonAryangrandfathermadeitdangerousforhimtoremaininAustria,
soheleftforEnglandin1939andtookupapositioninaCatholicboardingschoolinLeicestershire.
In1940heenlisted,andservedintheengineeringcorpsforthreeyearsbeforewithdrawingduetoill
health.
AfterthewarhehadpositionsattheUniversityofLeeds,andthenfrom1949attheUniversityof
Cambridge,becomingaFellowofTrinityCollege,Cambridge.HebecameProfessorofMedieval
HistoryatCambridgein1972.
NotablepeoplewhostudiedunderUllmanincludeJanetNelson.
Ullmannprincipallyconcernedhimselfwiththehistoryofthoughtinthemediaevalperiodandthe
historyofthePapacyintheMiddleAges.HismostsuccessfulbookwasTheGrowthofPapal
GovernmentintheMiddleAges,whichdealswiththerelationshipbetweensecularandecclesiastical
powerinmedievaltimes.InnsbruckUniversityawardedhimanhonorarydoctorateinpoliticalscience.
