Guidelines for Publishing Articles

in Engineering Science
1. All articles must have an Abstract and a Conclusion. Other headings can be used
freely in the article. Please note that all headings should be in bold and have a point size
of 14. All other text should have a point size of 12, unless it is a long verbatim quote
from another source in which case it should be point size 10 and displayed, see
instruction 5 below.

2. All text should be justified.

3. Italics should be used sparingly. The only legitimate use is for foreign words which
have not become part of the English language, for example:
In situ (Latin origin)
Bremmstrahlung (German origin)

4. Please note that Latin terms should on the whole be avoided, as they are obscure for all
but a small number of people, for example please avoid:
Passim
Ex nilho, etc
5. As with any scientific journal, quotes verbatim1 from other sources should normally be
avoided. When such a quotation is necessary then if the quote is short (less than two
lines) it can be quoted in quotation marks, if it is long (more than two lines) it should be
displayed in font size 10 and displayed without quotation marks, for example:
If a short quote from Pauling was needed it would be shown like this: Most of the
principles that have been developed are crude, . (from page viii of Pauling, L.,
(1960) The Nature of the Chemical Bond, 3rd edition, London: Oxford University
Press). If a lengthier quotation were necessary it should be presented like the example
in the next paragraph.
In 1959 Paulings summary of the understanding of the chemical bond was that:
The theory of the chemical bond, as presented in this book, is still far from perfect. Most of the
principles that have been developed are crude, and only rarely can they be used in making accurate
quantitative prediction.

6. As shown in the footnotes below, footnotes should be in point size 10 and justified.
Footnotes should be used very rarely.

7. All units of measurement should be consistent with the SI (Systme Internationale

dUnits) system. A space should be left between the number and the units. A space
should also be left between the different constituent units. For example:
1/ 2
15.6 MPa m
11

6.672 x 10

N m kg

1 Please note that although verbatim is an obvious Latin word it not italicised as
it has entered common usage in the English Language
