Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM
Introduction
Education is one of the most important investments a country can make in
its people and its future; it means the acquisition of knowledge and abilities, and
the development of ones character and mental powers by training and
instruction (Tenedero, 2010). It is therefore of great value to any person. Its value
is very meaningful to the students especially to those skillful to gain their goals in
life.
Everyone has their own idea of the value of a college education. For them,
the value of a college education lies in the skills developed, the knowledge
received, and the networking opportunities created (Hopkins, 2010). Its
important to think through gaining soon in return, for them to be more
knowledgeable to things around them and to develop abilities in life.
Education can lead to a higher income, professional advancement, and
personal growth. A person without education is deprived of many benefits. Not
only lacks the knowledge of human affairs but also the ability to appreciate the
value of many of the things that concern own welfare. One of the huge benefits of
education is that it helps a person to understand the position that he/she
occupies in the society. It doesnt only give a better skill but also the confidence
that can be created (Walace, 2010)
The value of education depends on the students if they want to delight in
or not in an education, through it we can inculcate moral values. (Gandhi, 2010)

Knowledge can never be learned. Knowledge is the fruit of experience and

experience is the sensation of the individual. Individual experience is an internal
happening and is the function of awareness. And one of the processes of
knowing self, of raising awareness, is to be able to identify and clarify values.
(Wakchaure, 2011)
Per observation and insights gathered from informal sharing of ideas, it was
noted that the attitudes of students towards education 20 years ago are far
different from students today. Today, we usually hear parents having problem
with their children who are sent to school but do not diligently earn good grades
because they skip classses and take education for granted. Young adults today
would seem to lack direction and plans for life. They are observed to be more
happy go lucky than their parents generation.
The researcher wanted to study this problem to know what motivates HRM
students to do well in class and the effects to their student life. The researcher
also sought to be more knowledgeable in this situation and to understand well
about what the real value of education to students.
Statement of the Problem

Definition of Terms
For clarity and understanding, the following terms are defined conceptually
and operationally:
Education. It is an instruction or training by which people learn to
develop and use their mental, moral and physical powers. (Slavin, 2000)
The same meaning was used in this study.

Hotel and Restaurant Management. It is a course program that are both

in the hospitatliy industry. It improves the profitability of the businesses by
ensuring quality control and pleasant experience. (Livingstone,2011)
In this study, Hotel and Restaurant Management referred to one of the
programs offered by St. Paul University Iloilo
Perception. It is the ability to undestand the action of mind in referring
sensations to the object. (Sekuler, 2012)
In this study, perception referred to the viewpoint of the respondents.
Value of Education. It encourages imagination, creativity and interest
in knowledge. It is an essential part of intellectual freedom, and one of its main
values is improving how students view, exist in and participate in the world.

expectations.

Chapter 2
THEORETICAL BACKROUND
Review of Related Literature
Education is the key to success and opens the doors to a length of
responsibilities for advancement for the benefit of both individual and the country.
Education is an essential element towards the path of sustainable progress.
Educated and skilled people are some of the necessary ingredient of societies
and market economics. A highly competent and knowledgeable labor force is
essential to the progress of nation. Education starts inside the family, second in
personal views and third at school. It creates path of the importance of education
to gain a valuable future. It starts in an own little way to make ultimate goal
happen. (Atienza and Ducker, 2011)
Since knowledge has become the true capital, Peter Ducker (2011),
Austrian-born

American

management consultant, educator,

and author

considered education to be the main factor throughout human existence. In the

world full of circumstances, each and everyone should have globally key into
communication for a better future. The value of education will bring up to a higher
level because it helps gain knowledge and development in skills of education.
According to Dr. Howard Gardner (2011), cognitive psychologist and
professor at Harvard University, all human beings are smart in their own unique
way. It is just that their potentials for growth as an intelligent human. On the youth
and education, In Jadid (2011) study it found that once formal education is

derived from the youth, no refinement in manners will be established in the

community. The sharp edges of a character would not be smoothed and they will
be acting like uncivilized people. A natural sense of human dignity and honor to
self is the result ofeducation. According to Baha i Sacred Writings (2012) where
there is no educator, all souls would remain savage and where it not for the
teachers, the children would be ignorant creatures. Education, by no means,
cannot change inner beings, but it can somehow improve in small rare ways. It
would discover through different styles and uniqueness.
Learning capacity is the ability to fill the gap between the knowledge
stored from the past and the knowledge required to address current tasks and
challenges (Zack, 2010) by rearranging existing knowledge, revising previous
knowledge structures, and acquiring new knowledge (Dibella, Nevis, & Gould,
2010; Dixon, 2010; Huber, 2011;). When students receive new knowledge, they
selectively attend to and process the information (Dixon, 2012), demonstrating
wide intra- and inter-individual variability in the amount of change and learning
that occur (Ram, Stollery, Rabbitt, & Nesselroade, 2010). The degree of learning
is in part due to a reciprocal process of individual engagement and invitational
practices established in the classroom (Billet, Barker, & HernonTinning, 2002;
Johnson, Perez, & Uline, 2013). If a student is afforded the opportunity to
engage in learning activities and the new learning is valued, learning is
increased.
Towards a more responsible education students are encouraged and
should be motivated to study and inquire themselves to a new learning and

development in their skills. The purpose of education is to impart knowledge for

the students to learn, and hopefully apply what is learned. Education routes to a
better employment. According to the study of Lopez (2013) it leads to career
advancement

because

many believe

that

education

makes

exceeding

opportunities accessible.
The Nielsen (2013) survey notes 87 percent of online Filipino
respondents believe that education also makes it possible to earn higher income.
It is in a personal goal to be more productive in life or not. Receiving higher
education is very important because it is the future that is being discussed in the
end.
Parents strive to work to allocate money for the education of their
children, they were the first who motivated children to go to school. It all has the
purpose in life and one thing is to get educated and to gain the things want in life.
It creates future and in that it is one of the ingredients in making a great
upcoming. Education is seen as a leveling factor that will help look, get better
jobs and better salaries. It could be the one that will lead path to a desirable life.
Without education they will live life full of discrimination and unfairness.
In the study of Tenedero (2010) he found learning is sometimes defined
as acquisition of information. Regardless of the personal learning style of each
students. It is gaining information to different sources around. A view of learning
process can teach different directions on how it wants to gain knowledge in every
individual. There are a lot of people that could not go to school or not get
educated due to some complications in life. Integration in education is when

student is able to attach personal meaning to the new information and to make
personal use of it. It is applying new thoughts and ideas in daily life. In educating,
parents should find time at home to personally assist educational activities to
their children for this will largely contribute to positive growth and development.
To be educated is an honor and achievement in life. The importance of
education is a self-enlightening process that would guide every person in some
different ways that could help in life for the future plan. Education is physical or
intellectual effort. There is no more striking and fruitful exercise than having a
good education. According to OSullivan (2011) Transformative learning involves
experiencing a deep, structural shift in basic premises of thought, feelings and
action. It involves understanding one self and relationship with other humans and
with the natural world.
According to Aquino (2012) in life, education assumes the existence of life.
Education is not something presented to or done for young people or for men
and women. It is an opportunity for the importance of setting goals, vibrant,
eager, growing human beings to do something they want to do. It gives the living
a chance to live. Education assumes that life has a serious purpose, manifesting
itself in a meaningful occupation. The element of purpose is of transcendent
importance. Its the education which transforms a person to live a better life and
more importantly in a socially well being.
The value of education can contribute to the Philippines, Filipinos have a
deep regard for education, which they view as a primary avenue for upward
social and economic mobility, according to U.S. Library of Congress The

10

Philippines is not rich in the world, and the Filipino parents want their children to
make the Philippines rich, and the only way to do that is with a good education.
Filipinos value education as a key to success and achievement in life. They put
high premium on the value of education.
According to Filipina women, Filipinos have the burning desire to learn
about everything they can. They learn fast especially when they can benefit from
what they know. Filipinos know that with the right knowledge, they can arm
themselves to survive in the reality of life. That is how Filipinos succeed in life;
with the knowledge they accumulate through school and the street smarts they
acquire everyday. That is what Filipinos want their future children to gain;
knowledge to help them out in life.
Importance of education is very genuine. Without being educated they
would not improve as an individual. They are the one to take risk if they could not
be in school and could not get proper education. Nurturing is not easy but hard
work pays off everything. Education development will arise if people will just give
importance to education. Enhancing skills and growing will make them a better
person and education is the key of gaining it. Lack of knowledge about school
tends to show poor memory and knowledge.
According to Jones (2009) Motivation is important for good studying.
When the person was motivated motivated, they will find it easy to stay focused
over a period of time. When a person is not motivated, they will not only find it
difficult to stay focused, but you will find it difficult to get started in the first place.

11

The ability to get motivated to study can have a very positive effect on a
students study levels and grades. A motivated student will find it easier to go the
extra mile and do all the necessary tasks that need to be done to assure
success. The right motivation will allow students to study a lot more focused and
with more concentration. Motivating yourself to study is especially helpful when
you feel a lack of motivation or face procrastination during your studies. Mueller
(2015)
According to the study of Platt (2013) The habits of high effective students,
some people believe that really successful students are just born that way. True,
some students are able to breeze through school with little or no effort. However,
the vast majority of successful students achieve their success by developing and
applying effective study habits. If you want to become a succesful student, don't
get discouraged, don't give up, just work to develop each of the study habits
below and see grades go up, knowledge increase and your ability to learn and
assimilate information improves.
The Academic performance of the students in this era of globalization and
technological revolution, education is considered as a first step for every human
activity. It plays a vital role in the development of human capital and is linked with
an individuals well-being and opportunities for better living (Battle & Lewis,
2002). It ensures the acquisition of knowledge and skills that enable individuals
to increase their productivity and improve their quality of life. This increase in
productivity also leads towards new sources of earning which enhances the
economic growth of a country (Saxton, 2000). The performance of every students

12

depends on the activities and knowledge they have, in that education is

contributing effectively for quality of performance of learners. "An investment in
knowledge pays the best interest." Franklin (2011)
Summary of Literature Reviewed
Education is one of the purposes why studies are made to be reach of
each and everyone. Education is not only by studying, working and getting good
quality. It is really a means of exploring, recognizing, and discovering new things
which still do not know and boost knowledge. It is in the character and
perspective of each and every one that would guide in every way of life. The
importance of education still depends on the person. Either each will give
attention and concern about their education or not. The value of education guides
people to a new perspective in life. It supervises the mental and moral growth of
each individual.
The right to be well-educated is a chance to be well-formed as a person.
The importance of education let people form a finer system in their respective
lives. It is in education that they are shaped as an individual. The purpose of
education is to help in everyday life, molds them to be a better person and to
have an improved skills and abilities.
The value of education will bring a person to deeper thoughts and
challenges in life and that would result to have a higher quality of education.
Education is the one that will bring a worthy and decent life for the future. They
cannot call a person a whole if they havent experienced what real education is. A
person with knowledgeable thoughts, special skills and has good character is a

13

well-educated person. Education is the key to success. It will give them a path to
a better living.
Education is a process to enhance the living. It enlightens self and
confidence to a person and that would develop each of them as a whole. It is an
opportunity that opens the gate to have a better live in the future. The value of
education is a once in a lifetime luck and chance to each and everyone. Without
proper education, people would not have a decent living and modest heart.
Filipinos have been brought up in an environment where education is a
priority. In the Philippines, people care about the education, they give importance
into it no matter how hard life is. Value of education is the number one priority of
the filipino people, it is the path of a better future coming their way.
The importance of education over employement and money is that
Education provides us with knowledge about the world. It paves the way for a
good career. It helps build character. It leads to enlightenment. It lays the
foundation of a stronger nation. Education makes a man complete. Kautilya
(2011), an Indian philosopher, royal adviser, and professor of economics and
political science very rightly underlined the importance of education, some 2000
years ago. He has highlighted the fact that education enriches people's
understanding of themselves. He has said that education is an investment in
human capital, and it can have a great impact on a nation's growth and
development

Discussion of Results
The respondents of the study were St. Paul University Iloilo students from
Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management from second year to fourth
year students ranges from the ages of 17-22 years old. Majority of respondents were
female composed of 47 and 28 males, in terms of year level, 25 students were 2nd
year, 18 were 3rd year, and 32 were 4th year students. It was identified that HRM
students do value education in terms of its importance. The results showed that 80% of
the students valued education the most over money, employment and married life.
Respondents knowledge on understanding the value of education was giving
importance into it, 21 respondents stated that valuing education was about learning
about self and wisdom of life, 14 respondents who stated that their understanding about
valuing education was for preparing for the future, 12 respondents education was the

Education is very important to them for reasons that it could lead them to a better future.
Based from one of the respondents stated Education is important because it makes
me able to learn in my daily life. Students has highly positive perception and viewpoint
when valuing education in terms of its importance. The importance of education over
employement and money is that Education provides knowledge about the world. It
paves the way for a good career. It helps build character. It leads to enlightenment. It
lays the foundation of a stronger nation. Education makes a person complete. The
students of the St. Paul University Iloilo find education as one of the important keys in
the future for it will provide different learning and knowledge that would brought them to
a better upcoming. The perception of respondents on valuing education in terms of

28

their friends to go to school. 69 respondents positively answered they set goals before
they study based from one of the respondents stated Yes I set goals because you

question in motivation, internet was the highets, 60 of the respondents stated that it
helps them in difficult school work for reasons that it makes their life easier and they
could simply click and easily get answers from hard questions. Internet has been

In the article of Tucker (2012) Change the negative mind-set about school. Overview the
advantages or benefits of going to school. Think about the things you hope to achieve
by going to school or the special things you like about attending school. Make multiple
copies of the finished list and place them in diverse places around home to help

29

motivate to get ready for school. The students of St. Paul University Iloilo finds that the
desire and motivation in education will surely help in the mindset of each individual to
become more independent and fully determined to the future. It was determined that
respondents has positive intellection on education in terms of study habits. The
perception were positive, a total of 45 respondents had a study schedule for them to

41 respondents. Responses of the most preferred time to study was every night with 31

to an article Don't study when you're really tired. It's better to get a good night's sleep
after studying for a short time than to push on at two in the morning. You won't
remember much and you're likely to see a performance drop the next day.
Respondents has positive explanation that the ways their quizzes and homework/s
helps them in class performance has directly increases their grades and for some
reasons it produces knowledge, serves as a reviewer and assists them in class
activites. It helped them a lot in gaining good grades and absolute performance in class.

30

weighted good with a value grade of 86-88. Bear in mind that the wonderful things you
learn in your schools are the work of many generations, produced by enthusiastic effort
and infinite labor in every country of the world. All this is put into hands as inheritance in
order that you may receive it, honor it, add to it, and one day faithfully hand it to your
children. The students actions reflect on their academic performance and school
works. Every students has its own encouragement in valuing education. The Academic
performance of the students in this era of globalization and technological revolution,
education is considered as a first step for every human activity. It plays a vital role in the
development of human capital and is linked with an individuals well-being and
opportunities for better living (Battle & Lewis, 2002). It ensures the acquisition of
knowledge and skills that enable individuals to increase their productivity and improve
their quality of life. They value education for reasons that it would help them build a
better future someday. Overall results respondents value education in simple and little
ways they could do. A positive outcome was acknowledged for respondents they give
priority in education in terms of its importance, motivation, study habits and academic
performance.
According to James Trewby The respect given to education by Filipinos is made
clear in a Tagalog Proverb cited by Cortes, translated as Learning is a wealth that
cannot be stolen (Cortes 1980, 145). This hunger for learning, and the recognition that
families will make any sacrifice to get their children to schoo, theyll move heaven and
earth to achieve it (Doyle 2005). The Filipino people have deep concern for education
because it occupies a central place in political, economical, social, and cultural life in the
Philippines. The government allocates a high budget every year for Philippine education

31

and guarantees that every Filipino has the right to quality education, Cruz (2010). There
are many highly educated people coming of the educational system in the Philippines.
Filipinos have a deep regard for education, which they view as a primary avenue for
upward social and economic mobility. Education produced change as one factors or
another gained control for the country to become a better place. The importance of
education is not only by being in a good school with high standards, not all about
studying and getting good marks, it is really a means to discover new things which we
don't know about and increase our knowledge and it is being good enough to know your
priorities in life and by character. Education is the key to success, it will lead you to
better future, have a good job someday and earn enough for a better life. An educated
person has the ability to differentiate between right and wrong. It is the foremost
responsibility of a society to educate its citizens. People must realize the importance of
education. People must aim to ensure that each citizen of our nation is educated and
independent individuals. With education, people are not only gaining something from it,
but also contributing to the growth of the country. Education has broadened minds. It is
a form basis of any society. It is responsible for the economic, social, and political
growth and development of society in general. Education imparts knowledge, whereby
making discoveries and implementing them for the betterment of the society to live in
and it has to be sought from anything and everything that one does. It is opening minds
to learn new things and pursue different options with a clearer vision of things, makes
one's goals clearer and makes one more receptive to change. The perception of the
respondents brought generation today has had a significant effect on the way people
live, work and study. Overall of the responses of perception of the HRM students about

32

valuing education and giving importance resulted into a positive outcome. Their point of
view in education encouraged them to do better and become good examples in the next
generation. Every person has its own understanding and knowldge about valuing
education. New process of teaching and learning and the way education is managed
would definitely be welcomed more in the society for students that they would have
more knowledge and familiarity in the surroundings. The results of the study shows that
HRM students perception in valuing education were concrete. They give priority in their
school works most especially in their class performance. Their perception in education
supported them to be a better individuals and to gain a better future someday.

leads them to better future and education provides us with knowledge about
the world. It paves the way for a good career and future. In understanding the
value of education, respondent stated that education was for preparatory for
the future, its about wisdom of life and self. This is attributed to the fact that
education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the
world. Mandela (2013) Education is one of the important processes in human
life that people tend to through so as to pursue their long term dreams. In
todays world, education is believed to be the power for it is the process that
makes good men out of nothing. In the contribution of education respondents
stated that it has given them more knowledge, it taught them to be

37

independent, it has contributed new learnings to them. In an article it is

attributed that education is recognized as an extremely important process as
they also believe that it is through education that the country can gain political
social and economic stability. HRM students consider education lays a good
platform in everyones life.
3. In terms of motivation to go to school, majority of the respondents were
influenced by their parents. This is attributed to the parents for they were the
first guardiance. Motivation requires activity physical or mental. Physical
activity that entails effort, persistence, and other actions and mental is
planning, making decisions, solving problems, and assessing progress. Most
activities that students engage in are geared toward attaining their goals.
Respondents set goals before they study for them to be mind ready and to

schedule and school works. It was stated that majority of the respondents
have study area at home, where they could have time for their school works
and activities. It is consider that having a good place to study would motivate
a person more into studying. Majority of the respondents study time was
every evening. In studying every evenning it proves that your mind actually
works. According to an article I read Don't study when you're really tired. It's
better to get a good night's sleep after studying for a short time than to push
on at two in the morning. You won't remember much and you're likely to see a
performance drop the next day. It is observed that effective study habits
does not just happen, but acquired. As such, it has to go through mental
processes before it cam be established as a habit. Therefore, students who
have developed good study habits establish effective study technique.
Persons learning skills memory processing strategies and general test and
examination performances are appreciably improved.
5. In terms of academic performance, majority of the respondents have good
feedback regarding their performance. Therefore in every school setting,
students are perpetually in search of academic success, the success of
academic performance is their ultimate goal. The grade performance relies on
students action and perseverance in their school works. Academic
performance can be expressed in the form of good scores and prizes as a

39

result of hard work and exceptional performance in classroom tests,

assignments and examination (Robinsonm, 2001). HRM students has good
academic performance for majority of them has a developed mindset, grow as
an individual and progres their skills and knowledge.
.
