    EuropewasdevastatedafterWorldWarIIbecauseofthedestructionthatithadbroughtthe
    countryduetoyearsofbattlesthatwerefought.Thisleadtoeconomicproblemswhichresulted
    inascarcityofjobsandfood.During1947,GeorgeMarshallproposedaplanthattheUnited
    StateswereresponsibleforgivinghelptotheneedyEuropeancountriesandnameditthe
    MarshallPlan.ItwasimportantbecauseithelpedmanyEuropeancountriesandnotonlydid
    theyprovidefood,buttheyalsoprovidedmachineryandothermaterialsnecessarytorebuild
    WesternEurope.ItwasamajoraccomplishmentforGeorgeMarshallbecauseitwasapproved
    byCongressaftermanydebatedabouttheplan.AfterthisplanwasapprovedtheCommunist
    YugoslaviareceivedaidafteritbrokeawayfromSovietdomination.

    TheBerlinAirlift
    OncetheMarshallplanwasputintoaction,EuropebeganrebuildingandtheUnitedStatesand
    itsalliesbegancompetingwiththeSovietUnionoverGermany.In1948,France,Britainandthe
    U.SdecidedtotakeawaytheirarmyfromGermanyeventhoughtheSovietswantedthemkeep
    themdividedwhichcausedtheSovietstoholdWestBerlinhostage.Italsoleadthemto
    starvationbetweenthefourdividedzonesinBerlin.TheSovietUnionhadcutoffalotof
    materialssuchaswater,highwayandrailtraffic.WiththistheSovietsthoughtthatthetheallies
    wouldsurrenderbut,insteadtheSovietsadmitteddefeat.

    TheTrumanDoctrine
    ThisdoctrinemadewasdirectedtoaskingtheCongressforhelpinTurkeyandGreece.Inthis
    doctrineTrumanpointedoutthedifferencesbetweendemocracyandcommunism.Hestated
    howhesupportedcountriesthatrejectedcommunismandwasmadeagreatcontroversy.In
    conclusion,aftermanydebatedthattheywouldnotbeabletocarryonaglobalcrusade,
    Congressallowedtheaidforthecountriesupto$400million.Thiswassignificantbecauseit
    preventedtheSovietsfromexpandingcommunismduetotheforeignpolicyofcontainmentthat
    PresidentTrumanmade.
