PURPOSE STATEMENT
September 1, 2008

Our Mission
We will:
Increase faculty use of instructional technology in general, and of Blackboard in particular
Develop models for employing instructional technology to support effective pedagogy and
efficiently achieve learning outcomes
Provide training and support to faculty in their use of instructional technology for that same
purpose
Be and mentor other faculty to become role models to students in the purposeful and proficient
use of technology

Our Model of Service

We will accomplish our mission by providing the following services:
Training sessions as part of the HMCS workshop each fall, just prior to the start of Fall Quarter
Workshops during finals week of each quarter
Customized, faculty-driven, one-on-one support sessions on demand
A library of just-in-time training documents available on the HMCS Blackboard site
A Blackboard CUTIE “course” that provides information about and models best practices for
using Blackboard and related instructional technology in a pedagogically sound way
Collection and analysis of data regarding actual and optimal use of instructional technology, as
defined by students and faculty
As part of each training session or workshop, whether one-on-one or group, faculty will be
provided with the following:
• Face-to-face instruction
• A printed handout
• A 3-5 minute “how-to” video

We will be unable to provide the following services:

Technical support – we have neither the expertise, nor the network administrative privileges to
serve in this capacity
Same-day, on-demand training and support – our contractual obligations (primarily teaching
load) take precedence over our service to CUTIE
