Collection Development Proposal

June 17, 2015
LIS 773
Introduction
This collection development proposal aims to build the collection of graphic novels in an
elementary school library. The age range includes students in grades kindergarten-8th
grade.
A graphic novel is defined as sequential art narratives. Graphic novels are a format,
like audiobooks or e-Books. They include all genres of fiction and nonfiction. It is also
important to note that graphic means visual, not explicit As a way to reach a variety of
learners, the following formats are included: Playaways, books on CD, and eBooks.
Encourages Literacy
The best way to encourage children to read is by helping them find reading material that
they enjoy. Reading graphic novels for enjoyment inspires children to value reading,
improves reading skills, and encourages them to become lifelong readers.
Graphic novels provide a rich literacy experience that requires higher order thinking
skills. When reading a combination of text and visuals, the brain is more fully engaged.
Comprehension Strategies
Graphic novels contribute to the development of general reading comprehension
strategies:
*Making connections
*Previewing and predicting
*Summarizing
*Character analysis
*Making inferences
*Sequencing
Graphic novels also create the opportunity for new comprehension strategies:
*Interpreting the impact of lettering style in conveying emotion
*Analyzing the purpose of artistic choices, including perspective
*Understanding visual depictions of time
*Synthesizing all elements to imagine what is happening between frames
Multiple Literacies
The world we live in is constantly changing, including the way we communicate
information. To be fully literate now means to have print, visual, digital, and technological
literacies.
Like social media, film, TV, and websites, graphic novels create meaning by combining
text and images. The combination of words and pictures is a more effective way to
communicate. Skills used to comprehend graphic novels can be applied to
understanding the myriad of messages in our multimodal world.

Graphic Novels in Schools

Students today must prepare web pages and multimodal presentations in addition to
traditional essays. The multiple literacies students need to succeed can be developed
through classroom use of graphic novels.
Graphic novels are currently used in schools of all levels, from elementary through
university. Educators have found that they help students connect to the curriculum. They
can also effectively be used to teach the Common Core Standards. Publishers have
recognized the potential, and are producing graphic novels with corresponding
instructional materials.
A few English Language Arts standards that directly relate to this collection development
process include those found in the Reading Standards for Literature in Grades 6-12:
Students should be able to
*Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences
from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions
drawn from the text.
*Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical,
connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape
meaning or tone.
*Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger
portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and
the whole.
Specific Populations
Graphic novels are especially meaningful to people in the following groups:
*English Language Learners
*People with Disabilities
*Struggling Readers
*Reluctant Readers
The images provide context clues to help readers understand the text, keep track of
characters, and follow the plot. These context clues provide a unique opportunity to
introduce new vocabulary. Extra context clues lead to greater reading success,
increasing confidence and motivation to read.

Selection Process
I work in the childrens department of a public library and just completed a graphic
novels course so many of the current titles are quite fresh in my mind. For the collection
development process, I perused our graphic novels shelves and solely used Titlewave
from start to finish. Titlewave is my one-stop shop for gathering pertinent information. For
this assignment, however, I enjoyed researching a variety of educational journals in
preparation, including Reading Teacher, Teacher Librarian, and Knowledge Quest. They
helped guide my search of resources.
