consultantsalpha.blogspot.comIt seems when anything works Excellent in the Military; they seem to want to rid themselves of the excellence, A-10, C-17, US
Battleship, Steel Armored Hulls, F-16/18....and then we are left with new stuff which have tons of downtime, can't perform...

I firmly disagree with Gordon. The USAF and its predecessors have not taken kindly to any mission that supports those on the ground. Mitchell, who
shot his wife, yes she survived, wanted an independent air arm with himself as the big honcho. His writing document this desire quite well.
If we look at ACTS, for example, the school drove Chennault out because he did not advocate strategic attack. He looked at the other aspects of
airpower as being important also. In WWII the Army Air Forces under Arnold emphasized strategic bombardment at the expense of everything else.
After all an air force can win wars all by itself. This was the prevailing attitude throughout WWII although for political reasons other forms of airpower
were tolerated.
After the war the key to an independent air force was the promise from Arnold, Spaatz, Vandenberg, and others was the USAF will always maintain a
tactical air arm to support the army. Shortly after it gained its independence the USAF gutted TAC.
The USAF was not keen on supporting ground troops in Korea, Vietnam (with the exception of bombing North Vietnam back into the stone Age),

Europe(the AirLand Battle concept), Afghanistan, or Iraq II. With regard to Allied Force the emphasis was on going to downtown Belgrade. In Iraq I it was
all about winning independently.
This is but a brief summary of USAF's support of US troops be they Army or Marines. If you don't believe me go through the literature. So...
the Air Force has never been comfortable with the A-10 or any ground attack aircraft. Remember the was a replacement decided upon, but the program
was cancelled. I also direct you attention to the short range air transport aircraft that the Army proposed and the Air Force fought against. Recall that
the USAF finally gave in and made it a joint program until it became the project leader. What happened to that program? It too was cancelled.
It is for these and other reasons I take issue with Gordon. The USAF does not like supporting anyone, especially the Army.

The disarmament of the National Guard both Air and Army has been going on for over a decade. The removal of fighter aircraft and helicopter gunships
from Guard and Reserve hands has been going on for some time based on trumped up phony data.
Reserve and Guard pilots have been an embarrassment to the Active component because the Active pilots have been out flown since before WW 2.
I agree that " The USAF does not like supporting anyone, especially the Army", but that also applies to any week end warrior.
