the launch complex at
Kennedy Space Center
in Florida. The space
vehicle carried three
astronauts Mission
Commander David R.
Scott, Command Module
Pilot Alfred W. Worden
and Lunar Pilot James B.
Irwin for the nation's
seventh manned lunar
voyage and fourth (and
final) manned lunar
landing.
Three months prior to
the launch, Shively and
the rest of the Okinawa
crew left Pearl Harbor
and headed to the expected recovery site in the
Pacific. Along the way
many pre-recovery practices, or Simexes, were
conducted. Helicopter
squadrons, underwa-

ter demolition teams

(SEALS) and members of
the ship's crews teamed
up in exercises to anticipate and be ready to
meet not only a normal
splashdown but any contingencies that might
occur. With some sailors
playing the roles of the
astronauts, recovery was
practiced for both normal
and catastrophic conditions. Medical personnel
was there to cope with
situations of disaster.
Injuries were simulated
as men were lifted via
recovery net to hovering
helicopter then flown to
the Okinawa. Even a boiler-plate mockup of the
Command Module was
hoisted aboard in practice
for recovery.

personal aide while the astronaut was on board the Navy vessel. (Special to
