Unit Title: The Radical Exponent!

Name: Cory Mark

Content Area: Mathematics

Grade Level: 8

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

8.EE
Expressions and Equations: Radicals and Integer Exponents
Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions.
Use square and cube root symbols to represent solutions to equations.
Big Ideas:

Students will learn skills to solve for integer exponents and radical equations with learning the material and playing games based on their learning
abilities and skills. The results and skills mastered from this unit will be tested for an in-class competition!
Unit Goals and Objectives:
(1) Students will learn how to solve radical and integer exponent equations to help students improve mathematical comprehension and selfteaching.
(2) These skills will allow students to see radicals and exponents and then understand the rules to solve more challenging questions and problems
in the future.
(3) To gain the necessary skills and confidence to look at complex integers and exponential equations, and then solve them quickly and concisely.
Unit Summary:
Have you ever looked a radical or exponential equation and felt overwhelmed? Ever wanted to toss out your math homework in the trash and
blame it on your dog's stomach? This unit will help alleviate those stresses and fears with exponential and radical practices. Keep the dog away
from your homework and have fun with this exciting unit of math! The skills learned in this unit will take you further than just this unit or math
course, but will go beyond where you might think. And in turn, will help you go for your dreams!

Lesson Activities:
Students will follow along an online lecture presentation (Prezi) as
they learn about the rules of exponents and how they are also used
to solve and simplify radical expressions. They will fill out a
worksheet to help them stay on task with the assignment per the
presentation.
