I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
This main focus of the lesson is to gather the students prior knowledge of multiplication strategies as well
as start learning multiplication strategies.
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
This is the first lesson of the multiplication unit to understand begin to introduce multiplication strategies.
What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to
applicable national or state standards. If an objective applies to only certain students write the
name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 7 as the total
number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number
of objects can be expressed as 5 7.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in
situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and
equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Students will be able to recall prior knowledge of multiplication from the year before.
Students will be able to recognize multiplication strategies.

Talk with students about their previous multiplication experiences in 2 nd
gradehaving a verbal conversation
Ask students, what does it mean to multiply? Where have we seen multiplication
before? They have had different multiplication strategies in their ADDs

Pass out multiplication pretest and desk dividers remind students to keep their
eyes on their own papers
Give students 10 minutes to complete as many as they canremind them it is not
for a grade, just to see how much the students know.
Students put in finish work when they are done
Once 10 minutes are up, pass out multiplication packet
Put mine up on ELMO and do it with the class at the same timemodeling,
underlining as we go togetherwalking around to make sure students are following
along
Introduce 3 vocabulary wordsall on front page
-Factor: 2 numbers being multiplied together
-Product: the answer of the 2 numbers being multiplied
-Multiple: skip counting

Tell students we are quickly going over these 4 strategies, but will do more with
each one individually starting tomorrow
