PRELIMINARYCONSIDERATIONS
Scopeofthepublication
i) ThispublicationistobereadinconjunctionwithUCP600andnotinisolation.
ii) ThepracticesdescribedinthispublicationhighlighthowthearticlesofUCP600aretobeinterpretedand
applied, to the extent that the terms and conditions of the credit, or any amendment thereto, do not
expresslymodifyorexcludeanapplicablearticleinUCP600.
Thecreditandamendmentapplication,theissuanceofthecreditandanyamendmentthereto
iii) Thetermsandconditionsofacreditandanyamendmenttheretoareindependentoftheunderlyingsaleor
other contract even if the credit or amendment expressly refers to that sale or other contract. When
agreeing the terms of the sale or other contract, the parties thereto should be aware of the ensuing
implicationsforthecompletionofthecreditoramendmentapplication.
iv) Manyoftheproblemsthatariseatthedocumentexaminationstagecouldbeavoidedorresolvedbythe

respectivepartiesthroughcarefulattentiontodetailinthecreditoramendmentapplicationandissuance
of the credit or any amendment thereto. The applicant and beneficiary should carefully consider the
documentsrequiredforpresentation,bywhomtheyaretobeissued,theirdatacontentandthetimeframe
inwhichtheyaretobepresented.
v) Theapplicantbearstheriskofanyambiguityinitsinstructionstoissueoramendacredit.Anissuing
bank may, unless the applicant expressly instructs to the contrary, supplement or develop those
instructionsinamannernecessaryordesirabletopermittheuseofthecreditoranyamendmentthereto.
Anissuingbankshouldensurethatanycreditoramendmentitissuesisnotambiguousorconflictingin
itstermsandconditions.
vi) The applicant and issuing bank should be fully aware of the content of UCP 600 and recognize that
articlessuchas3,14,19,20,21,23,24,28(i),30and31definetermsinamannerthatmayproduce
unexpected results. For example, a credit requiring presentation of a bill of lading and containing a
prohibitionagainsttransshipmentwill,inmostcases,havetoexcludeUCP600subarticle20(c)tomake
theprohibitionagainsttransshipmenteffective.
vii) A credit or any amendment thereto should not require presentation of a document that is to be issued,
signedorcountersignedbytheapplicant.If,nevertheless,acreditoramendmentisissuedincludingsuch
arequirement,thebeneficiaryshouldconsidertheappropriatenessofsucharequirementanddetermineits
abilitytocomplywithit,orseekasuitableamendment.

GENERALPRINCIPLES
Abbreviations
A1) Generally accepted abbreviations, such as, but not limited to, Intl instead of International, Co.
instead ofCompany, kgs or kosinstead of kilogramsor kilos,Ind. instead ofIndustry,
Ltd instead of Limited, mfr instead of manufacturer or mt instead of metric tons may be
usedindocumentsinsubstitutionforawordorviceversa.Acreditthatincludesanabbreviationin
itstextallowsadocumenttoshowthesameabbreviationoranyotherabbreviationthathas
thesamemeaning,ortoshowthecompletespellingofthewordorviceversa.
A2)
a. Virgules (i.e., slash marks /) may result in different meanings and should not be used as a
substituteforaword.If,nevertheless,avirguleisusedandnocontextisapparent,thiswillallow
theuseofoneormoreoftheoptions.Forexample,aconditioninacreditstatingRed/Black/Blue
withnofurtherclarificationwillmeanonlyRedoronlyBlackoronlyBlueoranycombinationof
them.

b. Theuseofacommawhenindicatingarangeofdatainacreditsuchasportsofloadingordischarge
orcountriesoforigin,mayresultindifferentmeaningsandshouldnotbeusedasasubstitutefora

Certificates,Certifications,DeclarationsandStatements
A3) Whenacertificate,certification,declarationorstatementisrequiredbyacredit,itistobesigned.
A4) Whetheracertificate,certification,declarationorstatementneedstobedatedwilldependonthetypeof
certificate, certification, declaration or statement that has been requested, its required wording and the
wordingthatappearswithinthedocument.
For example, when a credit requires the presentation of a certificate issued by the carrier or its agent
statingthatthevesselisnomorethan25yearsold,thecertificatemayevidencecompliancebyindicating:

a. thedateoryearthevesselwasbuilt,andsuchdateoryearisnomorethan25yearspriortothe
dateofshipmentortheyearinwhichshipmentwaseffected,inwhichcaseadateofissuanceisnot
necessary,or
b. thewordingasstatedinthecredit,inwhichcaseadateofissuanceisrequired,therebycertifying
thatasofthatdatethevesselwasnotmorethan25yearsold.
Whenacertification,declarationorstatementistoappearinadocumentwhichistobesignedanddated,
itdoesnotrequireaseparatesignatureordatewhenthecertification,declarationorstatementappearsto
havebeengivenbythesameentitythatissuedandsignedthedocument.
CopiesoftransportdocumentscoveredbyUCP600articles1925
a. When a credit requires the presentation of a copy of a transport document covered by UCP 600
articles1925,therelevantarticleisnotapplicable,asthesearticlesonlyapplytooriginaltransport
documents.Acopyofatransportdocumentistobeexaminedonlytotheextentexpresslystatedin
thecredit,otherwiseaccordingtoUCP600subarticle14(f).
b. Any data shown on a copy of a transport document, when read in context with the credit, the
documentitselfandinternationalstandardbankingpractice,neednotbeidenticalto,butmustnot
conflictwith,datainthatdocument,anyotherstipulateddocumentorthecredit.
c. Copies of transport documents covered by UCP 600 articles 1925 are not subject to the default
presentationperiodof21calendardaysstatedinUCP600subarticle14(c)oranypresentation
period stated in the credit, unless the credit explicitly states the basis for determining such
presentationperiod.Otherwise,apresentationmaybemadeatanytime,butinanyeventnolater
thantheexpirydateofthecredit.
Correctionandalteration(correction)
a.
i) Anycorrectionofdatainadocumentissuedbythebeneficiary,withtheexceptionofdrafts
(seeparagraphB16),neednotbeauthenticated.

ii) When a document issued by the beneficiary has been legalized, visaed, certified, etc., any
correctionofdataistobeauthenticatedbyatleastoneoftheentitiesthatlegalized,visaedor
certified, etc., the document. Such authentication is to indicate the name of the entity
authenticating the correction either by use of a stamp incorporating its name, or by the
additionofthenameoftheauthenticatingentityaccompaniedbyitssignatureorinitials.
b.
i) Anycorrectionofdatainadocument,otherthaninadocumentissuedbythebeneficiary,is
toappeartohavebeenauthenticatedbytheissueroranentityactingasagent,proxyorfor
[or on behalf of] the issuer. Such authentication is to indicate the name of the entity
authenticating the correction either by use of a stamp incorporating its name, or by the
additionofthenameoftheauthenticatingentityaccompaniedbyitssignatureorinitials.In
thecaseofauthenticationbyanagentorproxy,thecapacityofactingasagentorproxyfor

ii) When a document other than one issued by the beneficiary has been legalized, visaed,
certified,etc.,anycorrectionofdatais,inadditiontotherequirementsofparagraphA7)(b)
(i),tobeauthenticatedbyatleastoneoftheentitiesthatlegalized,visaedorcertified,etc.,
thedocument.Suchauthenticationistoindicatethenameoftheentityauthenticatingthe
correctioneitherbyuseofastampincorporatingitsname,orbytheadditionofthenameof
theauthenticatingentityaccompaniedbyitssignatureorinitials.
c. Anycorrectionofdatainacopydocumentneednotbeauthenticated.
Whenadocumentotherthanoneissuedbythebeneficiarycontainsmorethanonecorrection,eithereach
correctionistobeauthenticatedseparately,oroneauthenticationistoindicatethatitappliestoallthe
corrections.Forexample,whenadocumentissuedbyXXXshowsthreecorrectionsnumbered1,2and3,

onestatementsuchasCorrectionnumbers1,2and3authenticatedbyXXXorsimilar,togetherwith
thesignatureorinitialsofXXX,willsatisfytherequirementforauthentication.
Theuseofmultipletypestyles,fontsizesorhandwritingwithinthesamedocumentdoesnot,byitself,
signifyacorrection.
Courier receipt, post receipt and certificate of posting in respect of the sending of documents,
noticesandthelike
Whenacreditrequiresthepresentationofadocumentasevidenceofsendingdocuments,noticesandthe
liketoanamedordescribedentity,intheformofacourierreceipt,postreceiptorcertificateofposting,
suchdocumentistobeexaminedonlytotheextentexpresslystatedinthecredit,otherwiseaccordingto
UCP600subarticle14(f)andnotunderUCP600article25.
Dates
a. Evenwhenacreditdoesnotexpresslysorequire:

i) draftsaretoindicateadateofissuance;

ii) insurance documents are to indicate a date of issuance or effectiveness of the insurance
coverageasreflectedinparagraphsK10)(b)andK11);and
iii) originaltransportdocuments,subjecttoexaminationunderUCP600articles1925,areto
indicateadateofissuance,adatedonboardnotation,adateofshipment,adateofreceiptfor
shipment,adateofdispatchorcarriage,adateoftakinginchargeoradateofpickupor
receipt,asapplicable.
b. A requirement that a document, other than a draft, insurance document or original transport
document, be dated will be satisfied by the indication of a date of issuance or by reference in the
documenttothedateofanotherdocumentformingpartofthesamepresentation(forexample,by
thewordingdateasperbillofladingnumberxxxappearingonacertificateissuedbyacarrieror
itsagent)oradateappearingonastipulateddocumentindicatingtheoccurrenceofanevent(for
example,bythedateofinspectionbeingindicatedonaninspectioncertificatethatotherwisedoes
notcontainadateofissuance).
a. A document, such as, but not limited to, a certificate of analysis, inspection certificate or
fumigationcertificate,mayindicateadateofissuancelaterthanthedateofshipment.
b. Whenacreditrequiresadocumenttoevidenceapreshipmentevent(forexample,preshipment
inspectioncertificate),thedocument,eitherbyitstitle,contentordateofissuance,istoindicate
thattheevent(forexample,inspection)tookplaceonorpriortothedateofshipment.
c. Whenacreditrequiresadocumentsuchas,butnotlimitedto,aninspectioncertificate,thisdoes
notconstitutearequirementthatthedocumentistoevidenceapreshipmentevent,anditneednot
bedatedpriortothedateofshipment.
Adocumentindicatingadateofissuanceandalaterdateofsigningisdeemedtohavebeenissuedonthe
dateofsigning.
a. Whenacreditusesphrasestosignifytimeoneithersideofadateoranevent,thefollowingshall
apply:

i) notlaterthan2daysafter(dateorevent)meansalatestdate.Ifanadviceordocumentis
nottobedatedpriortoaspecifieddateorevent,thecreditshouldsostate.

ii) atleast2daysbefore(dateorevent)meansthatanactoreventistotakeplacenotlater
than2daysbeforethatdateorevent.Thereisnolimitastohowearlyitmaytakeplace.
b.
i) For the purpose of calculation of a period of time, the term within when used in
connectionwithadateoreventexcludesthatdateortheeventdateinthecalculationofthe
period. For example, within 2 days of (date or event) means a period of 5 days
commencing2dayspriortothatdateoreventuntil2daysafterthatdateorevent.

ii) Thetermwithinwhenfollowedbyadateorareferencetoadeterminabledateorevent
includesthatdateoreventdate.Forexample,presentationtobemadewithin14Mayor
presentationistobemadewithincreditvalidity(orcreditexpiry)wheretheexpirydateof
the credit is 14 May, means 14 May is the last day upon which presentation is allowed,
providedthat14Mayisabankingday.
The words from and after when used to determine a maturity date or period for presentation
following thedate of shipment, the date of an event or the date of adocument, exclude that date in the
calculation of the period. For example, 10 days after the date of shipment or 10 days from the date of
shipment,wherethedateofshipmentwas4May,willbe14May.
Providedthatthedateintendedcanbedeterminedfromthedocumentorfromotherdocumentsincluded
inthepresentation,datesmaybeexpressedinanyformat.Forexample,the14thofMay2013couldbe
expressed as 14 May 13, 14.05.2013, 14.05.13, 2013.05.14, 05.14.13, 130514, etc. To avoid any risk of
ambiguity,itisrecommendedthatthemonthbestatedinwords.
Documentsandtheneedforcompletionofabox,fieldorspace
Thefactthatadocumenthasabox,fieldorspacefordatatobeinserteddoesnotnecessarilymeanthat
such box, field or space is to be completed. For example, data are not required in the box titled
Accounting Information or Handling Information commonly found on an air waybill. Also see
paragraphA37)inrespectoftherequirementsforasignaturetoappearinanybox,fieldorspace.
DocumentsforwhichtheUCP600transportarticlesdonotapply
a. Documentscommonlyusedinrelationtothetransportationofgoods,suchasbutnotlimitedto,
Delivery Note, Delivery Order, Cargo Receipt, Forwarders Certificate of Receipt, Forwarders
Certificate of Shipment, Forwarders Certificate of Transport, Forwarders Cargo Receipt and
Mates Receipt are not transport documents as defined in UCP 600 articles 1925. These
documentsaretobeexaminedonlytotheextentexpresslystatedinthecredit,otherwiseaccording
toUCP600subarticle14(f).
b.
i) FordocumentsreferredtoinparagraphA18)(a),aconditionofacreditthatpresentationis
tooccurwithinacertainnumberofdaysafterthedateofshipmentwillbedisregarded,and
presentationmaybemadeatanytime,butinanyeventnolaterthantheexpirydateofthe
credit.

ii) The default presentation period of 21 calendar days stated in UCP 600 subarticle 14 (c)
onlyappliestoapresentationincludingoneormoreoriginaltransportdocumentscovered
byUCP600articles1925.
c. For a presentation period to apply to a document referred to in paragraph A18) (a), the credit
shouldspecifythatpresentationistobemadewithinacertainnumberofdaysaftertheissuance
date of the respective document, or a date that is to be mentioned in the document (for example,
when a credit requires the presentation of a document titled cargo receipt, documents to be
presentednolaterthan10daysafterthedateofthecargoreceipt).
ExpressionsnotdefinedinUCP600
The expressions shipping documents, stale documents acceptable, third party documents
acceptable, third party documents not acceptable, exporting country, shipping company and
documentsacceptableaspresentedshouldnotbeusedinacredit,astheyarenotdefinedinUCP600.
If,nevertheless,theyareused,andtheirmeaningisnotdefinedinthecredit,theyshallhavethefollowing
meaningunderinternationalstandardbankingpractice:
a. shipping documents all documents required by the credit, except drafts, teletransmission
reports and courier receipts, postal receipts or certificates of posting evidencing the sending of
documents.

b. staledocumentsacceptabledocumentsmaybepresentedlaterthan21calendardaysafterthe
dateofshipmentaslongastheyarepresentednolaterthantheexpirydateofthecredit.Thiswill
also apply when the credit specifies a period for presentation together with the condition stale
documentsacceptable
c. third party documents acceptable all documents for which the credit or UCP 600 do not
indicate an issuer, except drafts, may be issued by a named person or entity other than the
beneficiary.
d. thirdpartydocumentsnotacceptablehasnomeaningandistobedisregarded.
e. exporting country one of the following: the country where the beneficiary is domiciled, the
country of origin of the goods, the country of receipt by the carrier or the country from which
shipmentordispatchismade.
f. shipping company P when used in the context of the issuer of a certificate, certification or
declarationrelatingtoatransportdocumentanyoneofthefollowing:carrier,masteror,whena
charterpartybillofladingispresented,themaster,ownerorcharterer,oranyentityidentifiedas
anagentofanyoneoftheaforementioned,regardlessofwhetheritissuedorsignedthepresented
transportDocument.
g. documentsacceptableaspresentedapresentationmayconsistofoneormoreofthestipulated
documentsprovidedtheyarepresentedwithintheexpirydateofthecreditandthedrawingamount
iswithinthatwhichisavailableunderthecredit.Thedocumentswillnototherwisebeexamined
forcomplianceunderthecreditorUCP600,includingwhethertheyarepresentedintherequired
numberoforiginalsorcopies.
Issuerofdocuments
When a credit requires a document to be issued by a named person or entity, this condition is satisfied
whenthedocumentappearstobeissuedbythenamedpersonorentitybyuseofitsletterhead,orwhen
thereisnoletterhead,whenthedocumentappearstohavebeencompletedorsignedby,orfor[oronbehalf
of],thenamedpersonorentity.
Language
a. When a credit stipulates the language of the documents to be presented, the data required by the
creditorUCP600aretobeinthatlanguage.
b. When a credit is silent with respect to the language of the documents to be presented, the
documentsmaybeissuedinanylanguage.
c.
i) Whenacreditallowstwoormoreacceptablelanguages,aconfirmingbankoranominated
bank acting on its nomination may restrict the number of acceptable languages as a
condition of its engagement in the credit, and in such a case the data contained in the
documentsareonlytobeintheacceptablelanguageorlanguages.

ii) Whenacreditallowsadocumenttocontaindataintwoormoreacceptablelanguagesanda
confirming bank or a nominated bank acting on its nomination does not restrict the
language or the number of acceptable languages as a condition of its engagement in the
credit,itisrequiredtoexaminethedatainalloftheacceptablelanguagesappearinginthe
documents.
d. Banksdonotexaminedatathathavebeeninsertedinalanguagethatisadditionaltothatrequired
orallowedinthecredit.
e. Notwithstanding paragraphs A21) (a) and (d), the name of a person or entity, any stamps,
legalization,endorsementsorsimilar,andthepreprintedtextshownonadocument,suchas,but
notlimitedto,fieldheadings,maybeinalanguageotherthanthatrequiredinthecredit.
Mathematicalcalculations

A22) Whenthepresenteddocumentsindicatemathematicalcalculations,banksonlyDeterminethatthestated
totalinrespectofcriteriasuchasamount,quantity,weightornumberofpackages,doesnotconflictwith
thecreditoranyotherstipulateddocument.
Misspellingsortypingerrors
A23) Amisspellingortypingerrorthatdoesnotaffectthemeaningofawordorthesentenceinwhichitoccurs
doesnotmakeadocumentdiscrepant.Forexample,adescriptionofthegoodsshownasmashineinstead
of machine, fountan pen instead of fountain pen or modle instead of model would not be
regarded as a conflict of data under UCP 600 subarticle 14 (d). However, a description shown as, for
example,model123insteadofmodel321willberegardedasaconflictofdataunderthatsubarticle.
Multiplepagesandattachmentsorriders
A24) Whenadocumentconsistsofmorethanonepage,itmustbepossibletodeterminethatthepagesarepart
ofthesamedocument.Unlessadocumentprovidesotherwise,pageswhicharephysicallyboundtogether,
sequentially numbered or contain internal cross references, however named or titled, will meet this
requirement and are to be examined as one document, even if some of the pages are regarded as an
attachmentorrider.
A25) Whenasignatureorendorsementisrequiredtobeonadocumentconsistingofmorethanonepage,and
the credit or the document itself does not indicate where a signature or endorsement is to appear, the
signatureorendorsementmayappearanywhereonthatdocument.
Nondocumentaryconditionsandconflictofdata
A26) When a credit contains a condition without stipulating a document to indicate compliance therewith
(nondocumentarycondition),compliancewithsuchconditionneednotbeevidencedonanystipulated
document. However, data contained in a stipulated document are not to be in conflict with the
nondocumentary condition. For example, when a credit indicates packing in wooden cases without
indicating that such data is to appear on any stipulated document, a statement in any stipulated
documentindicatingadifferenttypeofpackingisconsideredtobeaconflictofdata.
Originalsandcopies
A27) Adocumentbearinganapparentlyoriginalsignature,mark,stamporlabeloftheissuerwillbeconsidered
tobeanoriginalunlessitstatesthatitisacopy.Banksdonotdeterminewhethersuchasignature,mark,
stamporlabeloftheissuerhasbeenappliedinamanualorfacsimileformand,assuch,anydocument
bearingsuchmethodofauthenticationwillsatisfytherequirementsofUCP600article17.
A28) DocumentsissuedinmorethanoneoriginalmaybemarkedOriginal,Duplicate,Triplicate,First
Original,SecondOriginal,etc.Noneofthesemarkingswilldisqualifyadocumentasanoriginal.
A29)
a. ThenumberoforiginalstobepresentedistobeatleastthenumberrequiredbythecreditorUCP
600.

b. When a transport document or insurance document indicates how many originals have been
issued, the number of originals stated on the document is to be presented, except as stated in
paragraphsH12)andJ7)(c).

c. When a credit requires presentation of less than a full set of original transport documents, (for
example, 2/3 original bills of lading), but does not provide any disposal instructions for the
remainingoriginalbilloflading,apresentationmayinclude3/3originalbillsoflading.

d. Whenacreditrequires,forexample,presentationof:

i) Invoice,OneInvoice,Invoicein1copyorInvoice1copy,itwillbeunderstood
tobearequirementforanoriginalinvoice.

ii) Invoicein4copiesorInvoicein4foldwillbesatisfiedbythepresentationofatleast
oneoriginalinvoiceandanyremainingnumberascopies.

iii) photocopyofinvoiceorcopyofinvoicewillbesatisfiedbythepresentationofeithera

a. When a credit prohibits the presentation of an original document by stating, for example,
photocopyofinvoiceoriginaldocumentnotacceptableinlieuofphotocopyorthelike,onlya
photocopyofaninvoiceoraninvoicemarkedcopyistobepresented.
b. Whenacreditrequiresthepresentationofacopyofatransportdocumentandindicatesadisposal
instructionforalloriginalsofthatdocument,apresentationisnottoincludeanyoriginalofsuch
document.
a. Original documents are to be signed when required by the credit, the document itself (except as
statedinparagraphA37))orUCP600.
b. Copiesofdocumentsneednotbesignednordated.
Shippingmarks
When a credit specifies the details of a shipping mark,documents mentioning the shipping mark are to
showthosedetails.Thedatainashippingmarkindicatedonadocumentneednotbeinthesamesequence
asthoseshowninthecreditorinanyotherstipulateddocument.
Ashippingmarkindicatedonadocumentmayshowdatainexcessofwhatwouldnormallybeconsidered

A40) Documentsrequiredbyacreditaretobepresentedasseparatedocuments.However,andasanexample,a
requirement for an original packing list and an original weight list will also be satisfied by the
presentationoftwooriginalcombinedpackingandweightlists,providedthatsuchdocumentsstateboth

A41) A document required by a credit that is to cover more than one function may be presented as a single
document or separate documents that appear to fulfill each function. For example, a requirement for a

Maturitydate
Whenadraftstatesamaturitydatebyusinganactualdate,thatdateistoreflectthetermsofthecredit.
Fordraftsdrawn,forexample,at60dayssight,thematuritydateisestablishedasfollows:
a. in the case of a complying presentation, the maturity date will be 60 days after the day of
presentationtothebankonwhichthedraftisdrawn,i.e.,theissuingbank,confirmingbankora
nominatedbankthatagreestoactonitsnomination(draweebank).
b. inthecaseofanoncomplyingpresentation:

i) when such drawee bank has not provided a notice of refusal, the maturity date will be 60
daysafterthedayofpresentationtoit;

ii) whenthedraweebankistheissuingbankandithasprovidedanoticeofrefusalatthelatest
60daysafterthedatetheissuingbankacceptsthewaiveroftheapplicant;
iii) whenthedraweebankisabankotherthantheissuingbankandithasprovidedanoticeof

Themethodofcalculationoftenorandmaturitydates,asshownabove,alsoappliestoacreditavailableby
deferred payment or, in some cases, negotiation, i.e., when there is no requirement for a draft to be

Bankingdays,gracedays,delaysinremittance
Payment is to be made in immediately available funds on the due date at the place where the draft or
documentsarepayable,providedthatsuchduedateisabankingdayinthatplace.Whentheduedateisa

nonbanking day, payment is due on the first banking day following the due date. Delays in the
remittanceoffunds,forexamplegracedays,thetimeittakestoremitfunds,etc.,arenottobeinaddition

The description of the goods, services or performance shown on the invoice is to correspond with the
descriptionshowninthecredit.Thereisnorequirementforamirrorimage.Forexample,detailsofthe
goods may be stated in a number of areas within the invoice which, when read together, represent a
descriptionofthegoodscorrespondingtothatinthecredit.
The description of goods, services or performance on an invoice is to reflect what has actually been
shipped, delivered or provided. For example, when the goods description in the credit indicates a
requirementforshipmentof10trucksand5tractors,andonly4truckshavebeenshipped,aninvoice
may indicate shipment of only 4 trucks provided that the credit did not prohibit partial shipment. An
invoiceindicatingwhathasactuallybeenshipped(4trucks)mayalsocontainthedescriptionofthegoods
statedinthecredit,i.e.,10trucksand5tractors.
Aninvoiceshowingadescriptionofthegoods,servicesorperformancethatcorrespondswiththatinthe
creditmayalsoindicateadditionaldatainrespectofthegoods,servicesorperformanceprovidedthatthey
donotappeartorefertoadifferentnature,classificationorcategoryofthegoods,servicesorperformance.
For example, when a credit requires shipment of Suede Shoes, but the invoice describes the goods as
ImitationSuedeShoes,orwhenthecreditrequiresHydraulicDrillingRig,buttheinvoicedescribes
the goods as Second Hand Hydraulic Drilling Rig, these descriptions would represent a change in
nature,classificationorcategoryofthegoods.
Aninvoiceistoindicate:
a. thevalueofthegoodsshippedordelivered,orservicesorperformanceprovided.
b. unitprice(s),whenstatedinthecredit.
c. thesamecurrencyasthatshowninthecredit.
d. anydiscountordeductionrequiredbythecredit.
Aninvoicemayindicateadeductioncoveringadvancepayment,discount,etc.,thatisnotstatedinthe
credit.
Whenatradetermisstatedaspartofthegoodsdescriptioninthecredit,aninvoiceistoindicatethat
trade term, and when the source of the trade term is stated, the same source is to be indicated. For
example,atradetermindicatedinacreditasCIFSingaporeIncoterms2010isnottobeindicatedonan
invoiceasCIFSingaporeorCIFSingaporeIncoterms.However,whenatradetermisstatedinthe
creditasCIFSingaporeorCIFSingaporeIncoterms,itmayalsobeindicatedonaninvoiceasCIF

A nonnegotiable sea waybill is not to include a clause or clauses that expressly declare a defective

orwordsofsimilareffectisanexampleofaclauseexpresslydeclaringadefectiveconditionofthe

provided it is identified as the insurance company elsewhere on the document, for example, when an
insurancedocumentisissuedandsignedAAinthesigningfieldbutshowsAAInsuranceLtdand
itsaddressandcontactinformationelsewhereinthedocument.
a. An insurance document that indicates that cover is provided by more than one insurer may be
signed by a single agent or proxy on behalf of all insurers or be signed by an insurer for [or on
behalfof]allcoinsurers.Anexampleofthelatterwillbewhenaninsurancedocumentisissued

Aninsurancedocumentisnottoindicateanexpirydateforthepresentationofanyclaimsthereunder.
a. Aninsurancedocumentisnottoindicatethatcoveriseffectivefromadatelaterthanthedateof
shipment.
b. When an insurance document indicates a date of issuance later than the date of shipment (as
defined in UCP 600 articles 1925), it is to clearly indicate by addition or note that coverage is
effectivefromadatenotlaterthanthedateofshipment.
c. Aninsurancedocumentthatindicatescoveragehasbeeneffectedfromwarehousetowarehouse
orwordsofsimilareffect,andisdatedafterthedateofshipment,doesnotindicatethatcoverage
waseffectivefromadatenotlaterthanthedateofshipment.
In the absence ofany other date stated to be theissuance date or effective date of insurance coverage, a
countersignaturedatewillbedeemedtobeevidenceoftheeffectivedateoftheinsurancecoverage.
Amountofcoverandpercentage
Whenacreditdoesnotindicateanamounttobeinsured,aninsurancedocumentistobeissuedinthe
currencyofand,asaminimum,fortheamountindicatedunderUCP600subarticle28(f)(ii).Thereis
nomaximumpercentageofinsurancecoverage.
Thereisnorequirementforinsurancecoveragetobecalculatedtomorethantwodecimalplaces.
Aninsurancedocumentmayindicatethatcoverissubjecttoafranchiseorexcess(deductible).However,
whenacreditrequirestheinsurancecovertobeirrespectiveofpercentage,theinsurancedocumentisnot
tocontainaclausestatingthattheinsurancecoverissubjecttoafranchiseoranexcess(deductible).An
insurancedocumentneednotstateirrespectiveofpercentage.
Whenitisapparentfromthecreditorfromthepresentationthattheamountdemandedonlyrepresentsa
certain part of the gross value of the goods (for example, due to discounts, prepayments or the like, or
becausepartofthevalueofthegoodsistobepaidatalaterdate),thecalculationofinsurancecoveristo

be based on the full gross value of the goods as shown on the invoice or the credit and subject to the
requirementsofUCP600subarticle28(f)(ii).
K16) Insurancecoveringthesameriskforthesameshipmentistobecoveredunderonedocumentunlessmore
thanoneinsurancedocumentispresentedindicatingpartialcover,andeachdocumentclearlyreflects,by
percentageorotherwise:

a. thevalueofeachinsurerscover;

b. thateachinsurerwillbearitsshareoftheliabilityseverallyandwithoutpreconditionsrelatingto
anyotherinsurancecoverthatmayhavebeeneffectedforthatshipment;and

c. therespectivecoverageofthedocuments,whentotalled,equalsatleasttheinsuredamountrequired

a. Aninsurancedocumentistocovertherisksrequiredbythecredit.

b. Eventhoughacreditmaybeexplicitwithregardtoriskstobecovered,theremaybeareferenceto

K18) Whenacreditrequiresallriskscoverage,thisissatisfiedbythepresentationofaninsurancedocument
evidencinganyallrisksclauseornotation,whetherornotitbearstheheadingallrisks,evenwhenit
is indicated that certain risks are excluded. An insurance document indicating that it covers Institute

a. When a credit is silent as to the insured party, an insurance document is not to evidence that
claims are payable to the order of, or in favour of, the beneficiary or any entity other than the
issuing bank or applicant, unless it is endorsed by the beneficiary or that entity in blank or in

shipper,toorderofissuingbank,toorderofnominatedbank(ornegotiatingbank)orconsignedto
issuingbank,acertificateoforiginmayshowtheconsigneeasanyentitynamedinthecreditexceptthe
beneficiary.Whenacredithasbeentransferred,thefirstbeneficiarymaybestatedtobetheconsignee.
L6) Acertificateoforiginmayindicateastheconsignororexporteranentityotherthanthebeneficiaryofthe
creditortheshipperasshownonanyotherstipulateddocument.
L7) Whenacreditindicatestheoriginofthegoodswithoutstipulatingarequirementforthepresentationofa
certificateoforigin,anyreferencetotheoriginonastipulateddocumentisnottoconflictwiththestated
origin. For example, when a credit indicates origin of the goods: Germany without requiring the
presentationofacertificateoforigin,astatementonanystipulateddocumentindicatingadifferentorigin

L8) Acertificateoforiginmayindicateadifferentinvoicenumber,invoicedateandshipmentroutingtothat
indicated on one or more other stipulated documents, provided the exporter or consignor shown on the

quantity or quality assessment or the like, with or without stipulating the document to indicate
compliance with these requirements, the data regarding the analysis, inspection, health, phytosanitary,
quantityorqualityassessmentorthelikementionedonthecertificateoranyotherstipulateddocument
arenottoconflictwiththoserequirements.
Whenacreditissilentastothespecificcontenttoappearonacertificate,including,butnotlimitedto,
any required standard for determining the results of the analysis, inspection or quality assessment, the
certificatemayincludestatementssuchasnotfitforhumanconsumption,chemicalcompositionmay
not meet required needs or words of similar effect, provided such statements do not conflict with the
credit,anyotherstipulateddocumentorUCP600.
Consignee information, when shown, is not to conflict with the consignee information in the transport
document.However,whenacreditrequiresatransportdocumenttobeissuedtoorder,totheorderof
shipper,toorderofissuingbank,toorderofnominatedbank(ornegotiatingbank)orconsignedto
issuing bank, a certificate may show the consignee as any entity named in the credit except the
beneficiary.Whenacredithasbeentransferred,thefirstbeneficiarymaybestatedtobetheconsignee.
Acertificatemayindicateastheconsignororexporteranentityotherthanthebeneficiaryofthecreditor
theshipperasshownonanyotherstipulateddocument.
