Executive Summary
The Dallas Chamber of Commerce is looking for a company to engage
both businesses and the community on issue that is important to Dallas.
Exxon is proposing partnering with the non-profit organization Mosaic Family
Services to raise awareness on the issue of human trafficking. The Chamber can
bring in some of their members to participate and engage in this issue along with
people of the Dallas community.
Exxon wants to put together a walk-a-thon that will take place on National Human
Trafficking day, January 11, 2014 at White Rock Lake. At the end of the walk-a-thon
we will have invited speakers like Kurshida Begum and Jean Baderschneider, along
with a performance by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Not only do we want to raise
awareness for this issue but we will be collecting money through our $50 dollar
registration, all proceeds will go to Mosaic Services. Mosaic helps victims and their
families recover through counseling, providing shelter and legal representation.
We want this event to change peoples lives, and continue to inform the public about
human trafficking.

Background
The Dallas Chamber of Commerce is looking for a business to create a
flagship program or event. Through their Blueprint for Economic
Prosperity, the Chamber seeks to promote business and community partnerships.
The Chamber is looking for a social need that is affecting Dallas. In addition, a
program/event that will highlight and engage both businesses and community.
We are ExxonMobil; we are the worlds largest internationally traded oil and Gas
Company. We are the largest refiner in the world, with our headquarters located in
Irving, TX. We are currently a member of the gBCAT (Global Business Coalition
against Trafficking). Therefore, we are currently involved in the issues of human
trafficking but we also do a lot of community work for education. Like working with the
National Math and Science Initiative. One of our biggest issues we fight for overseas
is Malaria.
There are so few statistics available for the Dallas area on human trafficking. This is
because not enough people know about human trafficking, and most who do know
about would never believe that this would be going on in the Dallas area. Many
victims include immigrants (many form Mexico) being forced into labor. This is an
issue for the business community. There are also many of our youths, especially our
young girls being forced into sexual labor. This is an issue for the community. This is
why Exxon wants to collaborate with Mosaic Family Services to raise awareness
about human trafficking.

According to CBS Dallas/Fort Worth (Columbia Broadcasting System DFW), human

trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in Dallas, with an estimated 2,400
teenagers exploited through forced and unpaid labor in 2013. Dallas is in a state that
borders Mexico so many men women and children are brought here illegally and
forced into labor for little or no money. With Dallas international airport and interstate
highways, this city is a prime candidate for international human trafficking, labor
exploitation; sexual and non-sexual. In Dallas there are approximately 6,000
runaways annually, one out of every three runaways is lured into sex trafficking within
48 hours. These are all current issues within the city of Dallas that if nothing is done;
the number of human trafficking cases (that are unable to be shown) will continue to
rise. Without proper statistics, it is hard to measure your success. Right now, there
are not enough statistics out there to tell us how many people are being trafficked in
and through Dallas. This is why raising awareness is so important for this cause.
Once more people in the community know and understand human trafficking, and
then they can report it. When people realize that they are victims, they can seek help.
The more people get involved the better we can measure our success. That is why
we have a national graph only, and why we do not have graphs or charts for Dallas

Partners

The Dallas Chamber of Commerce is

the
leading
coordinator
for
economic
development, public education, public policy,
and regional partnerships in Dallas. The
Chamber is a non-profit organization that urges and encourages other business
institutions to work hard in the Dallas community. The Chambers mission statement
is Together, we will lead the Dallas region to become the most economically
prosperous region-and most desirable place to live and work-in the United States.

ExxonMobil is the worlds largest publicly traded

international oil and gas company, and one of the top
petroleum companies in the United States. It was first
introduced by John D. Rockefellers Standard Oil
Company, and later, became ExxonMobil on
November 30, 1999, after merging with Exxon and
Mobil (formerly Standard Oil of New York and Standard Oil of New Jersey).
ExxonMobil is now the largest refiner in the world. We respect human rights in our
operations, not just because doing so fosters a stable business environment, but
more importantly, because it is the right and responsible thing to do. Exxon is
currently a member of gBCAT (Global Business Coalition Against Trafficking). Exxon
wants to assist in the eradication of trafficking in supply chains where forced labor
may unknowingly be present. Another area of focus is sex trafficking, with a particular
emphasis on the commercial sexual exploitation of children. ExxonMobil is located in
many other countries, and are enforcing strict company policies and fair practices in
all locations around the globe.

Mosaic Family Services is a non-profit community

organization that provides adequate services to
victims of human trafficking and their families. It
was introduced in 1993 by a refugee from Vietnam,
Dr. Walter Nguyen. Their mission is to support,
educate, and empower individuals and families of the communities they serve. They
are dedicated to serving survivors of human rights abuses from around the world and
within our community. They create access to opportunities for their clients,
empowering them toward independence. Mosaic is one of the few organizations that
support victims of human trafficking. They have also done a similar event such as this
one. On May 12 Mosaic Services had a 5K at Bachman Lake to raise awareness to
the Dallas Community.

Why the Chamber should support Walk to Freedom

The Chamber wants to make Dallas the most desirable place to live
and the most desirable place to bring a business. By bringing this
community together, to families that currently reside here and families who want to
come here can feel safe that people in their community are aware of the signs of
human trafficking and that they will not shy away from bringing to justice those
perpetrators. That Dallas business are up to date on transparent policies and are
engaged in their community. Crime is always a top of any communities list, and
human trafficking is a crime that is no different.

Goals

Increase awareness of human trafficking in Dallas.

Provide a hotline for people to use.
Provide information on how to spot a potential harmful situation.
Through donations provide money to Mosaic Family Services to so that they
can provide shelters, counseling and legal representation to victims.
Encourage businesses to update company policies and have resources for
employees to better understand human trafficking.

Where the Money Goes

Many families in the Dallas community are affected by human trafficking. We want to
give all proceeds to Mosaic Family Services so they can continue to provide shelters
to families, as well as legal representation and counseling.

The Event
Walk to Freedom is a walk-a-thon event to get the community informed
about human trafficking. Exxon, together with its partners, Mosaic Family
Services and the Dallas Chamber of Commerce will host this event.

The event will take place at White Rock Lake in Dallas, TX.
Pre-registered attendees will show up at 7 a.m. and go to the sign-in table, the

walk will start at 8 a.m.

Walk to Freedom will take place on January 11, 2014.
Because human trafficking is a cause that not many people are aware, one of
Walk to Freedoms goals is to bring awareness to the Dallas community.
o To provide resources, such as a hotline, and ways to spot potential
human trafficking cases.
Speakers:
o Kurshida Begum- tell her personal story of survival.
o Jean Baderschneider-represent Exxon, talk about her fight against
human trafficking.
o Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- perform at the end of the walk-a-thon.
Our agenda is to bring in at least $50,000, and to have at least 950 people
attend.
Expenses will be compensated with the money gotten from registration and
ExxonMobil.

We will use an online software, dojiggy.com to setup our website for

walktofreedom.com. Here at the website you can register, find all information on the
event and the cause. To promote our event we will have a billboard not far from
White Rock Lake. We will also use a radio ad that will air on 97.9 FM to reach a
broader audience.

The Place
White Rock Lake
Our event will take place on National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, January 11,
2014. White Rock Lake is a reservoir located in east Dallas, Texas. The lake was
formed by damming White Rock Creek, which today widens into the lake before
continuing south out of the spillway and emptying into the Trinity River. The trail that
runs along the edge of White Rock Lake is 9.33 miles. The Walk to Freedom walka-thon will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the bath house. Participants will have to park at
parking spots along the lake. Festivities will be held at Winfrey Point after the race.

Speakers and Performers

Khurshida Begum
Khurshida Begum is an authentic, powerful speaker, with a unique and
compelling story. What Khurshida has overcome in her personal life will not only
inspire the audience, but will motivate them to make a difference by fighting human
trafficking and many other social justice issues.
Khurshida educates and challenges individuals and organizations to recognize the
signs and problems of trafficking, and to take action in their own community. She
teaches by sharing her personal experiences, as well as the tools she used to
overcome battles that many would think is impossible. As a speaker, Khurshida
captivates and inspires audiences with her contagious energy, empathy and sense of
humor. She is engaging with her audience, relating her often difficult but triumphant
story for the purpose of changing old behaviors and thoughts into positive and
individual accountability. She will be able to speak on the behalf of the victims and
their families through her personal experiences.

Jean Baderschneider
Dr. Jean Baderschneider serves as the Chairman of the National Leadership Council
of The Polaris Project, and he is leading a global anti-human trafficking strategy
(Vision 2020). Since May 1, 2013, she is also President of End Human Trafficking
Now (EHTN), a Geneva, Switzerland based organization focused on engaging the
business community in the fight against human trafficking. Dr. Baderschneider retired
from ExxonMobil in February 2013 where she was Vice-President, Global
Procurement. She was responsible for all procurement, strategic sourcing, supply
chain management, logistics, warehousing and accounts payables worldwide. Over
the years, Dr. Baderschneider has traveled and worked extensively all over the world,
particularly in Africa, Middle East and Southeast Asia. Jean Baderschenider will be
speaking on behalf of ExxonMobil, to talk about her work when she was with
ExxonMobil and how other businesses in the Dallas community can make a
difference.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Last year Black Rebel Motorcycle Club collaborated with Not For Sale, an
organization that raises money and awareness to combat human trafficking and
slavery. BRMC also does other charity work like 2011s Aid Japan Charity Auction.
On their website they promote many other web pages advocating labor compliances.

Expenses Description
The expenses are organized by categories that are necessary to make
this event a success.
Marketing & Communications

Billboard:
For this event, we to plan rent a digital billboard 10ft X 30ft on the
highway. This will attract attention to the event and will get people
talking. This is one mode of our advertising. We plan to place the
billboard within a 10-mile radius of the event so people will attend since
they are already nearby.
Radio Ad:
We want to use a popular radio station, 97.9FM in Dallas, to reach more
people about the event. Since we want to attract a broad audience, the
radio will reach multiple groups.
Photographs:
We will be paying photographs to be taken throughout the event. This is
to show success of our event later on. If the walkathon becomes an
annual event, pictures will give credibility to the event and more people
will want to attend.
Dojiggy.com Account:
This will be the website that we use to promote, provide information,
and register for the event. We will list this with all the advertising so that
people can learn more and sign up to be a part of this walkathon.

Facilities

Furniture
We will rent 100 chairs for volunteers and booth participants. These
chairs will be used for the sign-up/registration desks, speakers by the
booths, speakers by the stage, and coordinators.
Stage
We will rent a 96 sq. ft. stage for the speakers during the event. This will
help them speak to the audience and give the audience a clear view of
the speakers.
Signage
This includes start/stop banners and direction arrows so racers will
know where to go. There will also be signs for the registration desk and
other posts.
Fences and Barricades
This will stop other pedestrians from getting in the way of runners and
help runners clearly see the path they will need to go. This will also stop
people who have not registered from coming into the event without
paying.

14

Security
In order to keep the runners and participants at the event safe, we will
hire police officers to monitor the event.
Permits
In order to abide by law, we purchase a permit to occupy the park
during our event.
Fire Package
This includes a fire extinguisher in case any fires break out. This is to
keep the participants safe.
Toilets
There will be Portal Potties so that the runners can go to the bathroom
for any reason.

Accessories

Short Sleeve T-Shirts:

This is in order to promote the event through the runners. Not only
during the event but also afterwards when they wear the shirt.
Bracelets:
This will be sold for extra profit and to promote the event in the same
way the shirts do. This expense is the down payment before selling
them.

Walk Expenses

Audio (PA System):

This set includes microphones and speakers for the speakers and
coordinators.
Balloons:
This will be to help show key spots in the event. The balloons will also
decorate the event.
Pledge paper, Collection Envelopes, Stickers:
This is paper for registration, files to keep the papers, and stickers for
each runner to put on their body while they walk.
Tables:
These will be used for the booths, registration tables, etc.

Food

Pizza:
This food is inexpensive so we can buy a huge quantity to feed the
runners and thank them. This is also because we do not want to be held
liable for runners who have not eaten and want to provide them
nourishment.
Granola Bars:
This is a healthy food snack to give the potentially health-conscious
runners.
Water Bottles:
This is for all the runners so that they will not become dehydrated. We
provide this to take care of the runners.

15

Miscellaneous

Gift Cards:
These are complementary gift cards we want to give the participants
Contingency:
This is the back up money in case something was missed in the
budget and we need the funds to pay for something.
Clean up Crew:
This is the crew to help clean the streets after the event.
Garbage Bags:
This is what the cleanup crew will use to clean up

The Case Study

ExxonMobil and its employees donated more than $8.8 million to
Texas higher education institutions through ExxonMobil Foundations
2011 Educational Matching Gift Program. ExxonMobil employees, retirees, directors
and surviving spouses contributed $2.6 million, which was matched with $6.2 million
in unrestricted grants from the ExxonMobil Foundation. ExxonMobil is proud to be a
part of the Dallas community, we want to show The Chamber that we are committed
to being an integral part of this community. We support the education of this
community and throughout Texas and we want to be a community leader in the fight
for human rights in Dallas.

To Whom It May Concern,

We would like to recommend Exxon Mobil for partner to implement your plan in the
Dallas Metroplex area. We had the privilege of working together with them in 2012,
where they sponsored campaigns about workplace giving in several different
countries.
Exxon Mobil has generously assisted on various occasions the underprivileged of
Dallas financially. The millions of dollars that were contributed were donated to 772
local charitable organizations through our Employees Favorite Charities Campaign.
They have helped different causes all around the globe in an effort to better
communities all over the world.
They were always willing to offer their assistance. Exxon Mobil would be an asset to
any project and I recommend them for any endeavor they choose to pursue. If you

To Whom It May Concern,
The Dallas Womens Foundation had the pleasure of working with ExxonMobil, for
one our charity events.
Dallas Womens Foundation organized a luncheon on human trafficking; we wanted
to focus on the women and children affected by human trafficking. We knew of past
work Exxon has done with other organizations they have worked with about human
trafficking, especially Jean Baderscheneider.
We invited women across the Dallas community to come hear some of the brave
victims tell their stories. Exxon allowed us to have Jean come and speak about the
work she has done on behalf of Exxon and the women and children she has been
able to help. Exxon generously donated $60,000 for our facilities to help women and
children in need in the Dallas area.
Exxon was very accommodating, and we enjoyed working with them. We hope that
you will decide to work with them on this cause, as it effects so many in our
community. Exxon is passionate about the Dallas community and can provide a great
platform.

Sincerely,
Ashlee Kleinert
