Christ Healing the Paralytic at the Pool of Bethesida, Christ Hlea- ling the Blind Born and Christ and the Samaritan Woman are all ill strations of parts of the Gospels which are read during the liturgicat service in the fourth, fifth and sixth week after Baste. In all the three ‘events from the Gospel according to John, there appears the motif of ‘water as an iistrument of salvation. This is why, since the earliest ti- mes, these events have always been seen in exegesis and liturgical practice as well as in Early Christian art as belonging to the overall context of Baptism, During the middle ages, their baptismal meaning ‘was not “forgotten”; in the scenes from the Sopotani exonarthex, it ‘was underlined by the depictions of the Pool of Bethesida, the Pool of Siloam and Jacob’ Well near the city of Sycha, where they ate repre sented as cruciform and quatrefoil stone fonts. The presence of scenes with stcong baptismal symbolism in the fresco-decoyation programme of the exonarthex can be linked to the liturgical function of this space. Several medieval typicons and euchologions, including Serbian Ar- chblshop Nikodim’s typicon from 1318-1319, preseribe that the Rite ‘of Great Blessing, which precedes the feast of Epiphany, should be performed in the narthex. By the 10th and [1th centuri- «es, fonts for blessing the waters had become a staidard clement of Byzantine church furnishings, to be placed in the narthex, the western portion of the naos or in some lateral compartment ofthe church, In monastery courtyards, phials were erected forthe purpose of perform ing this rte-Through cohparative analysis of materiel from different parts of the Byzantine Emnpiro we have conchuded that monastery phi- als and rooms with font for blessing the waters adopted, in time, the same fresco decoration programme as that characteristic of baptisres Indirect proof of this can be found in terminology: in medieval sour- ces fonts for blessing the waters gradually began to be denoted by terms earlier used for baptstries whilst water blessing itself assumed the same name as baptism. Themes appearing in the fresco program- me under the influence ofthe water-blesing rte were relatively plen- tif, Besides the Baptism of Christin the River Jordén and the events preceding it, there occurs a whole range of seenes with baptismal as- sociations: the Holy Cross, the Crucifixion, scenes from the lift of John the Forerunner, instances of prefigurement of Baptism ftom the ‘Old ‘Testament and various themes from the cycles ofthe Life of Christ and the Life ofthe Virgin. Underlying al these themes isthe moti of ‘water, forgiveness of sins and miraculous healings. The same principle applies to numerous individuol depictions of prophets, apostles and carefully selected saints.
