Lighting the
Candles
Just for Kids
This lesson includes a response reading for children and a short
lesson on the meaning of each week of the Advent.
HOPE (Prophet's candle) blue or purple
FAITH (Bethlehem's candle) blue or purple
JOY (Shepherds candle) pink
PEACE (Angels candle) blue or purple
LOVE (Christ Candle) white

Advent Week 1
HOPE
Prophet's Candle
Teacher: This first Advent Sunday is
about the Prophets who foretold us of the
coming of the Christ Child. As we light the
first purple (or blue) candle, we are
reminded of the HOPE we have in Jesus.

Child 1: (Lights the first purple or blue


candle).
Teacher: Let us pray.
Teacher: Lord, you are the light of our
world. We thank you for this Advent season
and the hope You give in our world. Amen.
Children: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.

Teacher: O gracious God of earth and


heaven, as we prepare to worship together let
us be reminded of your wonderful plan of
salvation. Help us to grow as we hear Your
Word and live in Your love.
Children: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.
Teacher: May the light of your love always
shine in our hearts. May hope continue to
encourage those who seek You.
Children: Amen.

Advent Week 2
Faith
Bethlehem Candle
Teacher: The first Advent Sunday was about
the Prophets who foretold us of the coming of
the Christ Child. We were reminded of the
HOPE we have in Jesus.
Child 1: (Lights the first purple or blue candle).

Teacher: The candle for this week is about


the FAITH of Mary and Joseph during the
Bethlehem trip.
Child 2: (Lights the second purple or blue
candle).
Teacher: Let us pray.
Teacher: Lord, you are the light of the
world. Thank you for Mary and Joseph who
led the way in faith to carry out your will.
Amen.

Children: Thank you for the faith of Mary


and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem.
Teacher: O gracious God, we know that
without faith, it is impossible to please God.
Children: Thank you for our faith!
Teacher: May Your faith continue to grow
and be established in our hearts.
Children: Amen.

Advent Week 3
Joy
Shepherds Candle
Teacher: The first Advent Sunday was about the
Prophets who foretold us of the coming of the Christ
Child. We were reminded of the HOPE we have in
Jesus.
Child 1: (Light the first purple or blue candle).

Teacher: The second candle was about the


FAITH of Mary and Joseph on the
Bethlehem trip.
Child 2: (Light the second purple or blue
candle)
Teacher: This week we light the pink
candle. The pink candle represents the
JOY of the Shepherds.
Child 3: (Lights the pink candle)
Teacher: Let us pray.

Teacher: Lord, thank you for the joy of your


salvation.
Children: Thank you for the joy you give.
Teacher: O gracious God, may our joy
increase as we study your Word and live in
your love.
Children: Thank you for the joy you gave
the shepherds.
Teacher: May the light of your joy always
shine in our hearts.
Children: Amen.

Advent Week 4
Peace
Angels Candle
Teacher: The first Advent Sunday was about the Prophets
who foretold us of the coming of the Christ Child. We
were reminded of the HOPE we have in Jesus.
Child 1: (Lights the first purple or blue candle).
Teacher: The second candle was about the FAITH of
Mary and Joseph on the Bethlehem trip.
Child 2: (Lights the second purple or blue candle)

Teacher: The third week we lit the pink


candle. The pink candle represents the JOY
of the Shepherds.
Child 3: (Lights the pink candle)
Teacher: Today we light another blue
(purple) which stands for PEACE and the
Angels.
Child 4: (Lights the third purple or blue
candle)
Teacher: Let us pray.

Teacher: Lord, you desire to bring peace to our


world.
Children: Peace on earth goodwill to all people.
Teacher: O gracious God, as the angels spoke
peace many years ago on that starry night, help
our words to be seasoned with your peace in our
church and homes
Children: Peace on earth goodwill to all people.
Teacher: Shine the peace of your love within our
hearts this Christmas season.
Children: Amen.

Advent Week 5
Love
Christ Candle
Teacher: The first Advent Sunday was about the
Prophets who foretold us of the coming of the
Christ Child. We were reminded of the HOPE we
have in Jesus.
Child 1: (Lights the first purple or blue candle).

Teacher: The second candle was about the


FAITH of Mary and Joseph on the Bethlehem
trip.
Child 2: (Lights the second purple or blue
candle)
Teacher: The third week we lit the pink candle.
The pink candle represents the JOY of the
Shepherds.
Child 3: (Lights the pink candle)

Teacher: Last week we lit the last blue


(purple) which stands for PEACE and the
Angels.
Child 4: (Lights the third purple or blue candle)
Teacher: Our final Advent candle stands for
LOVE, and it is white. White stands for
purity. White reminds us of the purity of the
Christ Child who was sinless and holy.
Child 5: (Lights the white candle)
Teacher: Let us pray.

Teacher: Lord, your love is greater than the


whole world.
Children: It is wider than the ocean.
Teacher: O gracious God of promise, we
prepare to worship together as we await the
fulfillment of your wondrous plan. Help us to
grow as we hear Your Word and live in your
love.
Children: It is higher than the mountain.
Teacher: May the light of your love always
shine in our hearts.
Children: Amen.
