Activity Title: Big Hunt

Source: Alderman, D. (2007, September 30). Big Hunt. Retrieved October 24, 2015.
Equipment:
Construction paper, markers, glue, and magazines
Description of Activity:
This activity consists of two parts. First have group gather and pick out any objects from a
magazine that they would like to show off or hang up. Cut and paste onto construction paper. The
next day have participants gather for a BIG HUNT. You will hide the objects all over your
facility with numbers. You will instruct the patients that they will win a prize for the most objects
found. This is a scavenger hunt. Assist participants around facility and encourage leaders to walk
those who cant walk. This is a great group activity and many leaders will be delighted to help.
You can encourage leaders and participants to wear a specific color of shirts to differentiate the
groups the day of the hunt.
Leadership Considerations:
This activity works best with 10-14 people. Make sure to assist participants and perhaps give
them a helping hand in finding the objects that were hidden. The activity will help participants
increase fine motor skills, enhance sense of well-being, and encourage socialization and
reminiscing.
Adaptations:
Participants with Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a group of related disorders characterized by a tendency
for recurrent seizures. There are different types of epilepsy and seizures. Epilepsy drugs are
prescribed to control seizures, and rarely surgery is necessary if medications are ineffective. It is
important that the therapist are educated on proper response to a seizure to avoid any bodily
injury. They should know about the different seizures and be observant during the activity. It is
imperative to keep other participants from reacting negatively towards the epileptic episode.

Participants with Dyslexia: Dyslexia is a learning disorder characterized by trouble reading due
to problems classifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words. Also

called specific reading disability, dyslexia is a common learning disability in children. This
activity works great for them since there is no actual reading involved. Therapist should assist
participants in explaining thoroughly how the game works and help them with choosing the
objects they want to paste on the construction board.
