Activity Title: Bowling
Source: Bowling For Children with Disabilities. (2015). Retrieved September 10, 2015.
Equipment: Ball ramp, ball rails, ball pusher or stick, sighted guidance, and ball
Description of Activity:
Every participants deserves the chance to participate in a game even if theyre not capable to do
so. The objective of the game is to roll the across the lane to knock down as many pins as
possible. The guide rails placed along-side the bowling line and they spread back from the foul
line. A participant who may need the assistance of a guide rail typically slides one hand along its
surface while transporting the ball with the other hand. The participant can conclude whether the
ball is being released in the center of the lane or near one edge. Participants are free to use any of
their bowling methods they prefer.
Leadership Consideration:
Bowling is a very common recreational activity appreciated by individuals of all abilities. It is an
indoor activity with very little equipment adaptations and is effortlessly accessible across the
country. This game normally takes from 4-6 participants per lane. Encourage the participants to
aim for a strike or to knock down as many pins they can. On their second try, recommend them
to either move the ramp or help them move it, so the ball can roll to the remaining pins still up.
Adaptations:
Participants visually impaired: For those visually impaired we have what is called a sigh assistant
or guidance. This usually is needed to tell a blind participant which pins have been knocked
down or how the remaining pins were missed. These aides recognize the pins either being
knocked down or left standing by calling out the locations of the pins and this will let the
visually impaired participant where to roll the next ball or how to adjust the delivery of the ball
the next time to bowl.
Participant with Physical disability: Be aware that a physically impaired participant needs a bit
more of assistance with this game. In every bowling alley there is a ball ramp for those whole
cant roll the ball themselves. Usually a physical disability will require you to be in a wheelchair.
This ball ramp helps the person to play the game without much force. The sight assistance can
place the ball on top of the ramp and locate the ramp in front of the lane. The participant once in

front of the ramp, just has to push the ball with their hand or arm or they may as well use a ball
pusher.
