amagraduateofGrandValleyStateUniversity,whereIreceivedmyBachelorsdegreein
SpecialEducationwithendorsementsinCognitiveandEmotionalImpairments.Currently,Iam
teachinginaCIselfcontainedclassroom,whichiswhereyourstudentwillbespendingtheir
schoolyear.
Iwantedtowritethislettertoexplainhowtheclassroomwillworkthisyear.Some
conceptsIwanttoaddressare:howIwillteachtheclass,howthebehaviorproblemswillbe
addressed,andhowthestudentswilllearninapositivemannerthisyear.
First,Iwilltalkaboutmyteachingplan.Thestudentswillstartoffeachdaybyhavinga
quiz.Thiswillpertaintowhatwearelearninginclass.Thequizzesthatareputinthe
gradebook,willbequizzesthatmoststudentshadhighachievementon.IfIfeelthestudentsare
understandingtheconcepts,thenitwillbegraded.Thestudentsareexpectedtoarriveontimeto
theclass.Failuretodosomorethanthreetimesineachsemester,willresultinameetingwith
yourstudent.Thisistogetanexplanationfromwhyyourstudentislateanddecideonabetter
strategy.Afterthequizzes,wewillstartinglearning!
ThesecondideaIwouldliketotalkaboutisthebehaviorplanintheclassroom.Ihave
listedintheirletterhomewhatisconsideredmisbehavior.Thestudentswhodecidetoengagein
suchactivitywillbegivencorrectiveactionandwillhavetoseemeafterclass.Theywillhave
todecidewhattheconsequencesareandifnecessary,youwillbecontactedaboutthesituation.
Myhopeisthestudentslearnthattheirbehaviorshaveconsequences.Iftheyhavetocomesee
me3timesinasemesterfortheirbehaviors,thatwillalsoresultinaparentmeeting.The

studentswillbegivenasliptoletyouknowthattheyareonestrikeawayfromaparent
meeting.Thisslipwillincludethetworeasonswhythestudenthashadtoseemeinthepast.I
wantthisyeartobeacollaborativeeffortwithme,you,andyourstudent.
Everymonth,Iwillholdandopendiscussion/collaborationnightwithyou.Youcan
comemeetwithmeifyouhaveanyquestions,concerns,orwouldjustliketoknowtheprogress
ofyourchild.Anysignificantachievementsthathashappenedandanyissueswillbediscussed
atthosemeetings.
Thestudentswilllearnthroughenrichmentactivities,bothfunandknowledgeable.This
classwillpreparethemfortheirfutureendeavors.Wewilllearnaboutpracticallifeskills.
Laundry,ridingthebus,etc.Theseactivitieswillpreparethemfortheirfutureashopefully,a
future,independentmemberofsociety.
Ienjoyworkingwithstudentsandfindthebehaviorsarereducedwhenthereisarigid
