These physical properties are described in the mineral chapter in your textbook. Use your textbook to review the terminology associated with these physical properties as you ‘complete the lab. Simple tests or observations can determine most of these properties, including luster, color, hardness, cleavage, fracture and streak. Other properties, including magnetism, piezoelectricity, fluorescence, wettability, odor, double refraction, refractive index, taste, and specific gravity, give minerals special uses. In the second part of this lab these properties will be used as aids for identifying a set of unknown minerals. The mineral study set selected for the first part of the lab exercise consists of minerals that exhibit certain properties particularly well. As you study each mineral property, look at and test the specimens to determine just how the described properties are manifest in the specimen. Mineral Properties: A-H are in your tray. . Luster 1. Compare samples A and B. What are their lusters? Hint: One is metallic, one isn’t A: fh 1c B: Non c IL. Streak 2. Determine the streak for samples A-D (circle one). a7 Sample A: Clear White Red/Brown Greet Black’) Sample B: Clear (White) Red/B1 Green Black Sample C: Clear White (Red/Bro\ Green Black Sample D: — Clear White(Red/Brown ¢ jreen Black 3. Judging by the similarity of streak, which two of the above minerals are the same mineral? Ck IL. Hardness 4, Using the items provided for you in the box on your table, determine the hardness of samples E and F. Hardness of E: Oly] Hardness of F: \(Wu IV. Cleavage and Fracture 5. Ona table at the side of the lab is a rock hammer with some pieces of calcite. ‘Smash the caleite lightly with the rock hammer. How many cleavage planes does calcite exhibit? Hint: It is the same number of planes as sample A. Z randy Gones Oo Y 6. Samples F, G, and H display the three types of fracture. Which sample displays which fracture? Fiyaquwar &:ooclndidal nieuws — V. Other Special Properties These properties are only found in a few minerals, but will be useful in idemtifying minerals later in this lab. The specimens for I-N are on the side table in the lab. 7. 1. Taste—What does this taste like? What might be another name for this sample of the mineral halite? lashes Salty, J. Double refraction—DO NOT smash these samples!! Observe some of the typewritten text on your lab sheet through a sample of calcite, spinning the sample in a circle on your page, and describe what you see. ner Kammer lable K. Feel—The feel of @ mineral when one handles or rubs it. Rub the tale sample and describe what you feel. Nev) moot Ta Spl L. Odor—Some minerals give off a characteristic odor. Try rubbing this sphalerite on a streak plate, and describe the smell. Stnells \e M. Play of colors—Observe the coloring on some of the cleavage surfaces of the plagioclase sample. Describe what happens to the colors as you move the mineral surface in the light. \ La } han or \iove Maa wn ligué + turns blug Which specimen number in your tray exhibits play of colors? #_(_) Mineral Identificati Specimen: your tray. 8.
