Grade5

Topic: Classifying

Organisms: Chapter 3

Lesson 2: How do
we classify animals?

Brief Lesson Description:

The lesson illustrates the differentiation of classes of
vertebrates animals. That includes 5 groups Fish,
Amphibians, Birds, Mammals and Reptiles. In addition, it
includes the features of each group of vertebrates
animal. Moreover, the lesson demonstrates some of the
examples of animals in each groups.
Performance Expectation(s):
Students who demonstrate understanding can:

Classify organisms can be classified on the basis of observable

characteristics. Students will sort/classify different living thing
using similar and different characteristics.

Describe why organisms belong to each group or cite evidence

about how they are alike or not alike

Specific Learning Outcomes:

- Learner will be able to recognize that animals can be classified
based on characteristics.
- Students will be able to identify the new concepts of the lesson to
analysis the information to use them for their activities
- Students will be able to recognize the concepts the
characteristics of animals to connect them with their prior
knowledge

Narrative / Background Information

Prior Student Knowledge:

Learners have a background about the lesson from a previous lessons.

The previous lesson was focusing on the classification system . The

teacher will link that lesson with this lesson. That will helps learner to
identify lessons and link their information .
Science & Engineering
Practices:
Analyzing and
Interpreting Data
Analyzing the information
in grade 5 builds on prior
experiences . That will
help them to link what
they had with what they
will have which increase
their expectation in their
daily life.

Disciplinary Core Ideas:

Crosscutting Concepts:

- Biogeology
The feature of animals
make them adapt on their
environment.

Vertebrate : An animal
that has a backbone
Amphibians : Animals
that live in both water and
land.

Engaging in Argument
from Evidence
Engaging in argument
from evidence in grade 5
builds on prior experiences
and progresses to
comparing ideas and
representations about the
classifying organism.

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:
Some students may have a difficulty with understanding
the new concepts ( language difficulties ) . That lead to
have a misconception around the class. In addition,
some students have some difficulties with getting the
instruction. That make them asking to repeat the
questions many time which start a misbehavior around
the class.
LESSON PLAN 5-E Model

ENGAGE: Opening Activity Access Prior

Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate
Questions:
Teacher will start the lesson with have a dissection with
the learner about the classification system lesson. she
will show the learner a picture about the lesson to
remind them.
Clarification Statement:
Lets go back to the classification system lesson.
who will tell me what is the first group? What is the
second group? What is the feature of the Chordata
group? Know , touch your backbones. Lets give
animals who have a spinal cord a scientific name.
Then the teacher will ask students to search in their
dictionary about the meaning of vertebrate.
EXPLORE: Lesson Description Materials Needed /
Probing or
- The teacher will shows learner a PowerPoint that
include the 5 main groups.
- She will ask students to open their textbook on page
98-99 and highlight the main key words from each
group.
But first, she will model with them one group to
show them what to highlight ( fish group). That will
help to clear the instruction and decrease the
misbehavior.

EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary

Defined:
The teacher will have the new vocabulary on the board
( PowerPoint)
And will have a discussion with learner about what did
they highlight. The teacher will clarify the lesson and
ask learner if they have any questions.
Vocabulary:
Vertebrate : An animal that has a backbone
Amphibians : Animals that live in both water and land.

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions:

Matching activity:
The teacher will give students two work sheet . One
with the picture of animals and the other one have the
feature of the animals. Students have to match between
the animals and their feature by cut and glue . Students
will work individually .
EVALUATE:
Formative Monitoring (Questioning / Discussion):
cloud questions activity:
The teacher will play this activity with the whole class.
The activity include a cloud that have an question about

the lesson to assess the students knowledge. The

teacher will ask one students to take on of the question
and answer it with the whole class. The process will be
repeated after the student answer the previous
question.
