ESCP Fieldwork Observation

Candidate: Amanda Case

Observation Date/Time: 9/29/2015

Setting: SDC 5/6

School/District:Enders/GG

Master Teacher: Joyce Barrosa

Supervisor:Farrier

Todays Visit:
During todays observation, Amanda was working with a small reading group.
They went through vocabulary words prior to reading. She had them do arm
movements to describe the words as they went through definitions. After going
through front-loaded vocabulary, the students took turns reading a passage on
Volcanoes. Amanda used the classroom system of Dojo points in order to reward
students for participating and following along as others were reading. Students
were focused well on the reading group and were motivated by the reward of Dojo
points. They also seemed to enjoy the physical movements as they did them
each time they came to one of their vocabulary words within the text.
When we sat down to talk about the day/week, Amanda shared that she
substitute taught for her master teacher last week. In the class she is working
with a student with ODD for the first time. During her time as a substitute, the
students had a marked response to her stepping in as primary teacher. Overall
they treated her poorly and did not respect her as the classroom teacher. The
student who has ODD was particularly challenging to the point that she needed to
follow his behavior plan and send him to the other SDC class for the remainder of
the period.

To Do:
I suggested to Amanda that she give herself a break and pick items to focus on
rather than worrying about every aspect of teaching simultaneously. For example,
focus on a strand of lessons, or focus on working effectively with students with
ODD. She is trying to tackle all of the challenges of teaching at one time and it
seems to be a bit overwhelming. We also discussed the impact of her being seen
as student teacher rather than another teacher, and how this changed how the
students respect her. This is a good thing to keep in mind for the future.
