Assignment 11
The above curriculum maps come from Madison School District. The classroom that these lessons are prepared for is a second grade
class at Madison Camelview Elementary School. Although the classroom contains the gifted cluster, there are 33 students in the
class, all academically and behaviorally varied.
Sleep
Standard: 2.MD.C.7. Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.
In this math unit, students will be focusing on how to tell and write time from both analog and digital clocks. While completing
this telling time unit, students take one mini lesson to devote to sleep and its importance. The sleep mini-lesson will begin with the
teacher explaining how important sleep is. As stated by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (2012), getting enough quality
sleep at the right times can protect your mental health, physical activity, quality of life, and safety. Kids need to get adequate sleep to
help them function to the highest of their ability throughout the day. The National Sleep Foundation (2015) says that children from the
ages of 6-13 need 9-11 hours of sleep every night. The teacher will explain all of the information above to the students and show a
video about why sleep is important and how much sleep 2nd grade students need to get every day.
The next step is to have students count how many hours they slept the previous night. Students will write down what time they
went to bed the night before in the math journal. On a small analog clock, they will set the clock to that time they wrote down. Then
students will write down what time they woke up that morning on their paper, underneath the time they went to bed the previous night.
The students will then count how many hours they slept the previous night on paper and then take their own small analog clocks and

6
Assignment 11
count the hours by moving the minute hand all the way around the clock. Students will write the number of hours and minutes they
slept the night before. Students will then have a round table discussion where each student at the table will share how much sleep they
got the previous night and if it was enough for a 2nd grader. If it was not enough, students will work together to brainstorm ideas on
how to get more sleep.
Sun Safety
Standard: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that
support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or
section. (2.W.1)
In this writing unit, students will be working on opinion piece writing where they express their opinion on a topic. The teacher
will begin the lesson by telling students some facts about what the sun does to your skin. According to the Cleveland Clinic (2014),
when skin is sunburned, cells and blood vessels have been damaged and with repeated sun damage, the skin starts to look dry,
wrinkled, discolored, and leathery. The skin may appear thicker but it has actually been weakened. The Cleveland Clinic (2014) goes
on to say that the suns most serious damage is the cause of skin cancer, which is the most common of all skin cancers. After providing
these facts, students will write an opinion piece where they state whether or not they think its important to wear sunscreen or not.
They will have to support their opinion reasons.
Healthy environment/Sustainability

7
Assignment 11
Standard: 2.RI.2 Recognize the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
During this part of the reading unit, students will be working on identifying the main idea of a multi-paragraph text. To help
educated students on the importance of recycling, students will read a non-fiction text about why recycling is important and the
necessity of recycling. Recycling is important as waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment because harmful
chemicals and greenhouse gases are released from rubbish in landfill sites and huge amounts of energy are used when making
products from raw materials (Recycling Guide, 2015). Recycling is essential because there is no space for waste because landfill sites
are filling up fast. Recycling also helps to preserve natural resources for future generations (Recycling Guide, 2015).
To help educate students on the reasons why recycling is crucial, students will read the recycling non-fiction text then be asked
to recount the main idea of the text, which was the importance of recycling. Students will have their own copy of the text and can
highlight parts they think are important as they read. Students will use these tools to identify the main topic of the reading passage,
which they will write on a piece of paper.
