Self-Assessment Midterm Reflection

1.

At this point in the term for this writing course, I would probably give myself a
B. I am researching conflict in family life and the effects is has on an individuals life
choices. I was initially confused about the brainstorming piece, but felt better about
the assignment after reading the responses of others in the class. Although I have not

gone back to edit my responses, I have plans to incorporate edits with my portfolio.
I have only been absent from class once. I have been an active participant since
day 1 so I would definitely give myself an A. The class is very interesting and all
participants are respectful. The small group discussions allow its members to feed off
each others ideas. I have been ready to go with my ideas and feel very free about

receiving critiques from my fellow classmates.

Discovery and the proposal was something I had never experienced in writing.
Asking questions and more questions confused me at first because I did not know
where it was leading me. I do not have a personal bucket list. I suppose I respect
persons that do.

I asked a lot of questions in my proposal that had nothing to do

with my research and more to do with the novel. This is where things got confusing. I
considered the critiques of my fellow classmates and that put me on the right track. I
appreciate all that they offered.

I truly enjoyed the discussions of the novel and movie. The discussion helped
me understand the different perspectives from others. I also appreciated hearing why
many felt Chris McCandless was brave. The discussion also helped me prepare my
thoughts for what I will write. The journal piece felt like an assignment. I felt the
discovering forms of writing forced me to look at my experiences with writing
assignments and my experiences with professional writing. I have read Shitty First
Drafts in the past. I understood the piece to be more about how we perceive our own

writing abilities.

My overall grade so far would probably be above average. If I am guessing
then, then I hope that by semesters end it will be. This very assignment is late as I am
writing, but I hope to deliver an exceptional portfolio for the final. I feel that I have
made contributions within my small group and have thoroughly participated in class.
I feel I have some great ideas and I am ready to put them together in my research
paper.
