Community Outreach Programs

Activity 1: Mentoring Program


Purpose: Mentors (community leaders, parents, corporate employees, etc)
assist at risk students in development of specific skills needed to promote
academic, emotional, and/or physical success in school and home.
Timeline: To begin within the first few weeks of the new school year and
continue until the last week of school. Mentors will meet with students once
a week during their special area time.
Next Steps: Students will attend a graduation program at the end of school
with their mentor. Students should be able to share how their mentor has
helped them achieve their goals in a written format.

Activity 2: Family Literacy Night


Purpose: To promote reading in school and at home and encourage families
to spend quality time reading together. Provide parents the tools to assist
students at home with reading skills.
Timeline: To be held twice a year, once in the Fall/Winter and Spring.
Next Steps: Have parents complete a questionnaire about the program with
an input on what changes can be made and how we can better help them.

Activity 3: Family Math Game Night


Purpose: To promote a fun experience between students, parents, and
school staff using math. Provide engaging math games based on the state
standards to give parents fun and inexpensive activities to do with their
child or children at home.
Timeline: To be held twice a year, once in the Fall/Winter and Spring.
Next Steps: Have parents complete a questionnaire about the program with
an input on what changes can be made and how we can better help them.

Activity 4: TCAP Boot Camp


Purpose: To provide parents and students with TCAP expectations, testing
format, and additional testing criteria such as scheduling, dos and donts.
The boot camp will help to eliminate fears or phobias about the test.
Timeline: Two weeks before the TCAP is to be given to students
Next Steps: Provide parents with brochures to assist their child or children
at home. Deliver test results to parents once they are received.

Activity 5: Science Fair


Purpose: To promote creativity for students that love science. To encourage
excellence in the science field and for those students to be recognized for
their interests by peers, parents, staff members, and community members.
Timeline: To be held once a year in March or April.
Next Steps: Students will be given awards based on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place
for an overall winner and by grade level. Have parents complete a
questionnaire about the program with an input on what changes can be
made.
