Unit 3 Poetry Project

For this project you will choose a poem from Unit 3 and research biographical
information about the poet. Then, you will write a 3-5 page paper giving background information
on the poet and explaining how their life influenced their poetry. You will also explain what you
think the meaning of the poem is and provide evidence to support your claims. Along with the
paper, you must give a brief presentation to the class. In the presentation, you will explain
several important points about the poets life and give a short explanation of how their life
affected the poem you analyzed in your paper.

Part 1: Paper
In your paper be sure to include:
1-2 pages summarizing the poets life and important experiences
- 1 page explaining how their life influenced their poetry
1-2 pages explaining the meaning of the poem
Quotes from the poem to support your claims
A works cited page citing any works you quoted in your paper

Part 2: Presentation
For your presentation you must:
Explain the poets background information (name, birthplace, family members,
occupations)
Give details about 3-4 events/people/jobs that influenced the poet and their work
Give a short (1-2 minutes) explanation of how the poets life influenced the poem you
discussed in your paper
