Guest Speaker Christine Caine, Proposal

Amnesty International is proposing a speaker event on January 13, 2016 and we need your
assistance. This is to propose your contribution of $670 toward bringing Christine Caine, the
founder of the A21 Campaign, to FGCUs campus to present on her organization.
Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings, mainly for the purposes of forced labor
and sex trafficking. As the world's fastest growing criminal industry, it affects every nation
across the globe. Every 30 seconds, someone becomes a victim of modern-day slavery.
There are more slaves in the world today than at any other point in human history, with an
estimated 27 million in bondage across the globe. Men, women, and children are being exploited
for manual and sexual labor against their will.
One to two percent of victims are ever rescued.
The average age of a trafficking victim is 12 years old.
It is clear that human trafficking is a big problem today. We must put a stop to it.
Amnesty International is an organization at FGCU whose purpose is to support the protection of
people who are denied justice, freedom, truth, and dignity. The A21 Campaign is a 501(c) (3)
non-profit, non-governmental organization that works to abolish human trafficking. The
proposed speaker event will help the cause of both of these organizations.
The Plan
The plan is to bring Christine Caine to the FGCU campus for one day, on January 13, 2016. She
would arrive at the Fort Myers airport on a plane early in the day giving her enough time to settle
in to a hotel, eat, and get rest if needed before she presents at 5 p.m. The presentation would be
held in the Cohen Center Ballroom on January 13, 2016 from 5 to 6 p.m. with forty-five minutes
being allotted to her presentation and the remaining fifteen minutes allotted to questions from the
audience.

The Cohen Center Ballroom

The benefits the Cohen Center Ballroom would provide are space, a stage, and good lighting.
Because the Cohen Center Ballroom is a relatively large room, it can seat about 450 people. The
event I am proposing will only require use of half of the room which would allow for an
audience of about 250 people.
Because the Cohen Center Ballroom provides a stage, it is great for a presentation such as the
one that Christine Caine will give. She will have enough space to move around on the stage
communicating with all sections of the audience.
Costs Table
The following table explains the costs of the event I am proposing in detail (the costs are all to
support Christine Caine):

Reason

Cost

Plane Ticket

$400

Hotel & Food

$250

Transportation

$20
Total Cost: $670

Who Will Benefit?

Bringing Christine Caine to the FGCU campus to speak about her organization will spread
awareness about the issue of human trafficking and will contribute to ending the issue in the
future. The event will benefit victims of human trafficking by the increased awareness that will
come from Christines presentation, as well as the potential support gained from the audience
toward ending human trafficking. Anyone attending the event will benefit from the knowledge
they will gain regarding how to help the cause of ending human trafficking in the 21st century.
Furthermore, people will benefit from the knowledge they will gain regarding the reality of

human trafficking, especially the statistics pertaining to it, which they may not have known
before. Last but not least, Amnesty International will benefit from the presentation because the
presentation will contribute to Amnesty Internationals mission of supporting the protection of
people who are denied justice, freedom, truth, and dignity.

A Past Event like the One I am Proposing

A similar event to the one I am proposing is one called Golden Tribe Lecture Series at Florida
State University. The event is a speaker series, through which different people who are either
experts in a certain field or are working at the forefront of a relevant political or social issue
present on a variety of academically-focused topics to the student body. The purpose of the
lecture series is to connect students with the people who are presenting and ultimately engage
students in issues and dialogue that will positively impact their overall academic, scholastic, or
humanitarian experience. The event I am proposing will be similar to the Golden Tribe Lecture
Series in that it will provide a way for students to connect with someone who is involved in an
important political issuehuman trafficking.
Recommendation and Conclusion
Due to the importance of ending human trafficking, action must be taken. Bringing Christine
Caine to speak on the A21 Campaign will contribute to ending the injustice being done to
millions of people around the globe.
Thank you for considering bringing Christine Caine to speak at FGCU. Please let me know what
you need me to do to make it happen. I am looking forward to your response in the next couple
of days.
