The Problem of Practice


The problem of practice is something that an educator cares about that would make a
difference for student learning if s/he improved upon it. It comes from the data, dialogue,
and current work.
A rich problem of practice:
Focuses on the instructional core (students, teachers, content)
Is directly observable
Is actionable (within the campuss control and can be improved in real time)
Connects to a broader strategy of improvement
Is high leverage (if acted on, it would make a significant difference for student
learning)
Of all the things we could pay attention to in classrooms, our focus will particularly focus
upon the problem of practice. We will maintain a balanced observation of the whole as
well as the particular.
