OBJECTIVE

The objective of this project is to automate the conventional power hacksaw machine in
U.I.E.T Chandigarh workshop in order to achieve high productivity of work-pieces than
the power hacksaw machine while reducing human intervention and cost of production.
Power hacksaws are used to cut large sizes (sections) of metals such as steel. Cutting
diameters of more than 10/15mm is very hard work with a normal hand held hacksaw.
Therefore, power hacksaws have been developed to carry out the difficult and time
consuming work.
But as every coin has two sides, similarly power hack saw employed in our U.I.E.T,
workshop has some disadvantages too. The power hacksaw in the UIET workshops faces
the problem that the operator has to feed the work-piece to the required length in to the
vice. Another aspect is that after a shaft has been cut for one time, the operator has to
unload the work-piece and advance the rest of the work-piece to the required length again
and again till the end of the work-piece is reached. Since, power hacksaw requires a
human intervention to feed the work-piece many times with measurements being taken
each time before feeding. Moreover, the whole process becomes cumbersome and time
consuming along with increasing cost of production.
To overcome above mention problems, we have automated the power hack saw. Now
worker has to only place the job/material on conveyor belt. The machine feeds the workpiece with the help of a conveyor, which is driven by an AC motor ensures that the
feeding stops when power supply is cut off.
Automation or automatic control, is the use of various control systems for operating
equipment such as machinery, processes in factories, boilers and heat treating ovens etc.
The biggest benefit of automation is that it saves labor, however, it is also used to save
energy and materials and to improve quality, accuracy and precision. Automation has
been achieved by various means including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical,
electronic devices and computers, usually in combination. Complicated systems, such as
modern factories, airplanes and ships typically use all these combined
techniques. Therefore, automation of power hack saw not only reduces human effort and
intervention but also increases accuracy while reducing cost of production and time
involved.
