Ideas to Appropriate Work of Art into Art Making Activity

1.) To appropriate the work of art into the classroom, the students could
look at several images of Matisses Cut-Out series. Then, as the
teacher I could have the students find an object that plays a significant
role in their life. I would have the students draw sketches of the object
and allowing the students to create an organic shape that represents
the object, and then applying that into the cut-out process. I would
have students cut out shapes that resembles their significant object
and create multiple layers onto a board.
2.) I could have students role-play as Matisse and work in groups or make
a collaborative collage. Groups could each come up with a theme and
work together to come up with shapes to represent that theme. The
group would need to also work together to manage where to place the
images on the wall.
3.) I could read the students a book, and have them visually represent the
story based upon organic and geometric shapes. The students will
need to come up with why they chose the colors that they did, and why
the shape represents the aspect of the story. The students could look
at Matisses work to analyze shapes and how he placed colors
together.
4.) I could bring in several plants and flowers, and have the students
collage and re arrange the plants as they wish. Then, the students
would be able to observe the collages that they created and cut out
shapes that represent the collage. The students will have a final
collage that represents the plants that inspired them. This would be
similar to Matisses cut-outs as he used some representations of plants
and flowers.
5.) The students could make a book about their life by using organic and
geometric shapes. The students would be able to understand color
theory from the activity and they could look at Matisses work to
understand how he used paper cut-outs as a visual aid to represent a
theme or a story.
