Issues of Multicultural Education
Multiculturalism is the coexistence of diverse cultures, where culture includes racial, religious,
or cultural groups and is manifested in customary behaviors, cultural assumptions and values,
patterns of thinking, and communicative style. In its simplest term, multiculturalism is the
preservation of different cultures or cultural identities within a unified society, as a state or
nation.
There are many examples of multiculturalism that are presented at my practicum site. In the
classroom, the teacher has many books out for the children to read and learn about the many
different things. Over in the blocks area there is a doll in a wheel chair, a helping dog, and books
on children who have disabilities and what they can do to help them. The rooms are set where
there is no prejudice and discrimination among staff, parents, children, and guests. The
classroom is made safe for the children. The environment is accepting to the children. There are
so many things around the class that helps make the childrens learning environment successful.
The teacher challenges each and every student in their daily activities to use their critical
thinking skills. If a child does not know how the teacher continuously come up with activities
until every child in the class is a critical thinker. The environment of the school itself is very
welcoming. They ensure that multicultural education is taking place in the classrooms for parents
to see.
