Mini Reading Lesson
Grade:
5th Grade
Rationale:
Learning about the men who were involved in writing the constitution will bring
the document to life for the students.
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.3
Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more
individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or
technical text based on specific information in the text.
Objective:
Students will be able to recognize the different men involved in writing the
constitution and the relationships between one another.
Procedures:
The teacher will introduce Men of the Constitution by Pamela Bradbury,
Remember when we read through this a few days ago to learn different facts
about the constitution which helped up fill out our KWL chart? We are going to
revisit this book but focus more on the men that were involved in writing the
constitution.
The teacher will skip to the second page in the book where James Madison and
Alexander Hamilton are introduced. The teacher will reread the page and show
the students the pictures shown of the men and have them turn and talk. Turn and
talk to a partner about why they think this person will be important to the
constitution and what they have in common
On the next few pages George Washington and Benjamin Franklin are introduced.
Again the teacher will reread the pages on these men and show the students the
pictures shown in the book. Turn to your partner again and discuss one reason
why these two men are so important to the constitution and what their relationship
is.
The students will continue to do this same process for Elbridge Gerry, James
Wilson, Edmund Randolph and Roger Sherman.
As the students turn and talk the teacher will ask the students to agree on one reason
why each man in an important asset to the writing of the constitution.
In between each pair of men, the students will share their ideas as the teachers write
them down on the whiteboard.

Assessment:
As the students are doing their turn and talk discussion, the teacher will talk around
and listen to the students conversations to ensure that the students understand the
information that is provided in the book.
The teacher will collect the papers where students wrote down their ideas and
connections.
Differentiation:
For students who are struggling with coming up with connections between the men
of the constitution the teacher will sit with the students and give them examples to
them come up with connections of their own.
Technology:
The teacher will show these brief cartoon videos about the constitution as another
way for students to learn the information but in a more fun and interactive way.
