Smart Goal #1

SMART
Specific
I work with a 14 year old boy who has Aspergers, at a secondary school,
in an integrated classroom. I would like to develop communication
strategies for working with this particular student. This student is also
gifted, and is taking a couple academic classes. He does not have any
friends in his academic classes, so he keeps to himself. He doesnt like
talking to any type of authority figure either. There are only two students
in the school that he talks to. He has not spoken to me yet, I would really
like for him to speak to me because it will make it easier to encourage him
to do his work. The only school work he has done this semester has been
coloring in a map of Canada. I would really like to develop strategies for
helping him do his work as well.

SMART
Measurable
I will know when I have achieved this goal when the student starts
communicating with me. I will be able to measure my success once I have
gained enough strategies to help me communicate with this student. I will
prove this goal by taking pictures of the work I was able to get him to do in
class.

SMART
Attainable
First I will speak to the SERT about the students needs and see if he has
any strategies that could possibly help me in communicating with the
student. I will then speak to the EA who works with him throughout the
day about some of the strategies she uses, when working with this
student. Then I would observe the students behaviour throughout the day,
as well as find out some of his interests. Once I am able to find out the
students interests, It will be easier to communicate with him. I will then
apply the strategies I learned when communicating with the student.
Once the student communicates with me, I will finally be able to apply the
strategies I learned to help him do his school work.

SMART
Realistic
One barrier that could prevent me from communicating with the
student will be when the student does not show up for school. He doesnt
come to school on Wednesdays so I am only able to work with him once a
week. Another barrier will be, trying to communicate with him in the
classes that he has friends in. This will give me limited time to be able to
communicate with him, by only being able to talk to him in one class, once
a week. I will overcome these barriers by, using the time I am not working
with the student, to speak to other staff members who work with him,
about any communication strategies that I could use.

SMART
Timely
This goal will start on November 19th and will be accomplished by
December 3rd.
