LEARNING TASKS

Module 4
What Do You Think?
Answer the following questions substantively:

 Unhealthy and problematic social media use is seen to adversely affect the interpersonal
relationship among the youth. What school and classroom intervention should teachers
employ to minimize the effect of social media addiction on the interpersonal relationship
among the youth?

ANSWER:

I think one school intervention that a teacher should employ in minimizing the addiction on
social media prior to interpersonal relationships among youth is to conduct a program
which will rebuilds and enhances the interaction and communication of a student to
others. A program which promotes developing strong interpersonal relationships between
youth. A program consists of activities that they can totally enjoy and involves physical and
mental connection. Other prior to the classroom intervention, teachers must confiscate
phones during class hours or no phone should be allowed so that children can totally
interact which others without any distraction. Further more, teachers must deliver the
importance of interpersonal relationship. And discuss the bad side of social media
dependents.

 When Teacher Nel visited a gaming station in the locality, he was alarmed by the language
of the gamers, some of which are his students. Gamers exchange profanity and swearing
while interacting in the gaming station. When Teacher Nel asked some of the gamers, he
learned that exchange of profane expressions is normal in the gaming station and gamers
are used to it. If you were Teacher Nel, just how would you react to such language of these
gamers? Do you agree with the idea that profanity is normalized in the gaming station?
Why or why not? What school/community intervention will you suggest to minimize
swearing and profanity among gamers?

ANSWER:

Profanity for students, youths and children nowadays are really common. They always
express their selves doing some inappropriate language and manners for communication.
They think that doing profanity should be common. But If I were teacher Nel, as I visited a
gaming station with that kind of surrounding I would be disappointed and be sad. Which
some are tolerating this kind of youths behavior which respect to each other is not being
value. We all know that in gaming station profanity is really normalized by the gamers , but
it is not being allowed to tolerate if respect is never been consider. I think an intervention
that I can suggest to minimize this kind of situation is to have parents and children's
meeting to discuss the prevention that they can do specially the parents to teach their
children to be aware and not tolerate such a behavior most specially within crowded or not
crowded environment. Then to give rules that the students must obey and follow within or
without the classroom, which they should experience such consequences if they tries to do
such unacceptable behavior. To have proper communication and to impose the importance
of respect most specially in communicating. From that students can learn from their
mistakes which is not tolerable.

 Teacher Ben is tasked to discuss the concept of SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity
and Expression) in a seminar which will be attended by senior high school students. He
thinks that such new and sensitive concept may not be well received by the students. He is
afraid that he might say words that may offend students. What all advise will you give to
Teacher Ben as he prepares for his talk?

ANSWER:

A piece of advice that I can give to teacher Ben is he should always provide security and
privacy for the students. And be careful to every words that he can share and the
discussion that he might make. He can do some sort of research so that he can learn how
he can interact to this kind of situation to the students. And as for the students who are
new to this kind of topic he can do some sort of introduction that will state why they are
attending this kind of seminar and the importance of it as they grow up. They need to
exaond their mind to such things. Which they must know what things they can avoid and
they can do as they are growing physically and also mentally. And teacher Ben can tell the
students that they re free to ask questions d if they feel something that they re not
comfortable with they can approach him. Teacher Ben should have patience, be
responsible, respectful and approachable.

 The pandemic has restricted community and school activities and staying at home is
encouraged by the authorities to stop the virus from spreading. As a result, students don't
have the chance to socialize with his classmates and peers. What learning activities should
teachers adopt to develop interpersonal skills among students who are under homebased
instruction? What are the pros and cons of these learning activities?

ANSWER:
Create a group activity in an online platform, just like reporting, physical activity via video
and etc. that involves 2 or more people at a time. This activity will help students to know
each other. Which they must accomplish the task well, they will start to communicate in
every member. They will know each personally even not physically. They can share ideas
and encourage each to finish the activity in that they can build new and good relationship
despite of the communication and socializing platform. Somewhat this is difficult, which
others cannot access to what platform we are on to with this pandemic. So there will be
some errors that students can experience doing some socialization and building
relationship with their classmate. But on the other side even if going outside is prohibited
and students cannot socialize or know their classmates personally but with the help of the
technologies they communicate and socialize despite of the situation.

 Teacher Cora noticed that Jim, the class president, sounds bossy and arrogant when he
presides the meeting. He has the tendency to preach about the class rules and regulations
and does not accept suggestions from his other classmates. One time, he saw Jim pointing
his finger to his classmate. Teacher Cora finds his verbal and body language inappropriate
and disrespectful. If you were Teacher Cora, what will you do to address this issue? What
advice will you give Jim?

ANSWER:

If I were teacher Cora, I will talk to Jim in private. And discuss what inappropriate and
unacceptable behavior he had done. I will talk to Jim calmly so that he would not be afraid
to talk and speak his part specially the reason why he did that behavior. And I will ask him if
as a class president does he think his behavior suits to the position that he is on to. I will
discuss to Jim what a leader must be , and as a classmate also a student should act with or
without in school. And this should be a lesson for him to learn , that even if you have a
highest position than others you have no right to be disrespectful. As a leader you must be
a role model and promote respects.

Enrichment
Perform the following enrichment task:
 Look for a research article about the impact of the lack of social literacy to student learning.
Summarize the findings of the study and discuss its teaching implications.

“The major problems facing the world today can be solved only if we improve our understanding of
human behavior”. Educational leaders, teachers, school counselors, social workers and school
psychologist have long argued that some students were under-performing academically because they
lack proper social skills (inattentiveness and unprepared during instructional periods, aggressive
behavior toward classmates and educational staff, inability to engage cooperative learning and
disruptive behavior in classroom) which affected their academic skills (studying skills, problem-solving
skills, critical and decision-making skills, mastery and performance skills, task management skills).
Students who struggled to master social skills faced more disciplinary consequences when they failed to
engage in appropriate behavior. They (students) need to be taught – directly and systemically – skills to
succeed in schools (Martens & Witt, 2004; Warger & Rutherford, 1996). In some cases, the combination
of a lack of social and academic study skills have precluded the students’ quest to experience academic
success during their high school matriculation.

The implication of this study should encourage educational leaders to make social and
academic skills an integrated ingredient of the course syllabus. Educational leaders and
administrators should mandate and include social skills instructions in the curriculum for all
classes from K-12. Teachers should be mandated to provide social skills instructions to students
in their classes and those instructions should be integrated into the course lesson plans.
Improving the student’s social skills increases the academic skills of the student’s through
mastery and performance skills and increases correct and acceptable social skills.

Parents have come to think of the education system much as they think of the family patriarch:
omnipresent, guiding and nurturing, dependable, and strong. Parents cannot confidently launch children
into today's world unless they are of strong character and well educated in the use of language, science,
and mathematics. Parents must possess a deep respect for intelligence, achievement, and learning, and
the skills needed to use them; for setting goals; and for disciplined work. That respect must be
accompanied by intolerance for the shoddy and second-rate masquerading as "good enough." Students
have the right to demand the best our high schools can provide. They must be vigilant and refuse to be
satisfied with less than the best. Our children must have good study habits coupled with hard work and
commitment, and be an active participant in the work of the schools.

This shows how the behaviors of the students could affect its performance academically. Also, on
how they interact with people who surrounds them. Lacking of social skills would greatly affect student’s
behavior towards in communication and building relationship with people. Children must enhance it's
social skills so they can go beyond and can go with the flow. They can easily interact to the class and can
be able to develop learning and to learn the proper communication well. As they will be able to train
and implies the teachings between parents, teachers and another person.
