Answer the following word problems. Show your complete solution and box your final answer. Final
answers should be rounded up to two decimal places.
1. A runner runs at a speed of 4 m/s around a circular track 40 meters in diameter. What is the
centripetal acceleration of the runner?
2. The minute hand of a clock is 0.25 m long. Compute for its linear speed and centripetal
acceleration.
3. A 0.750 m string is used to whirl a 0.20 kg stone in a horizontal circle. If 15 circles are completed
in a minute, determine the following: a) angular speed, b) linear speed, c) centripetal
acceleration, d) centripetal force, e) tension in the string.
4. A car can travel 60.0 kph on a level, curved road of radius 355 m. Compute for the coefficient of
friction between the tires and the road. How much centripetal force is exerted to keep the car on
track?
5. Calculate the torque produced by a 50 N perpendicular force at the end of a 0.2 m long wrench.
6. Calculate the torque produced by the same 50 N force when a pipe extends the length of the
wrench at 0.5 m
7. A 600 N girl sits on one side of a see-saw halfway from the center to the end. A 300 N boy sits
on the other end. a) What are the torques due to the weight of each? b) What is the net torque?
8. A meter stick is hung at its center at the end of a string. A 1 kg mass hangs by the end of the
meter stick. What mass should be hung at the 25 cm mark to balance the meter stick?
9. What is the angular velocity of a billiard ball that rolls with speed of 1.00 m/s without skidding and
has diameter of 5.72 cm? Express your answer in terms of rad/s.
10. Assume in the figure below that F4 = 300 N and F1 = 200 N. Assuming the weight of rod to be
negligible, how large will F2 be if the whole system is in equilibrium?
