ENG 1102: Writing and Inquiry in Academic Contexts

Intawiwat
Midterm Reflection
SELF- assessment:
1. Assess yourself as a student by giving yourself a grade and providing
explanation/justification for that grade. A-/B+
a. What are you going to be researching? I am going to be researching about Chriss
family life and his familys expectations on him and how exactly they relate to my
families expectations and my life.
b. Have you sufficiently followed the directions for each thing we have done so far?
Yes, I have tried my best to keep up with all the work in this class and participate
to my best abilities.
c. Have you gone back to edit your journals or other assignment? I have had some
peer editing, I plan to do some more editing when the final piece is being put
together into an e-portfolio on Weebly.
2. Assess your Participation in class by giving yourself a grade and providing
explanation/justification for that grade. This includes: attendance, attitude and
engagement, preparation. A-/B+ I have missed a few class meetings, but other than that I
believe I have a positive attitude about the class and the assignments we have worked on
this semester and done my best to engage in the class.
3. Discovery and Proposal: Explain your involvement with your extended inquiry so far.
How did you get to where you are now with it? DO you have a bucket list & How did
you come up with your bucket list? What issues did you run into that may have hindered
your research? How did you solve the issue? Did you make adjustments? What process
did you take with your proposal? Did you take the advice or consider what others
commented or questioned when it came to your Discovery & Proposal?
So far I have figured out what exactly I am going to do for my research part and the
project itself. I narrowed it down to just simply writing a research paper on my topic or to

be a little more creative and write journal entries. I decided to go about doing a journal
and comparing it to the book and the movie we watched in class and keep a record of
Chriss actions, his parents reactions and how they compare to my life and my parents.
Also I will compare the actions Chris takes to what I would have done, because not
everything Chris did I agree with. Doing to journal I ran into to problem of finding
enough sources for my bibliography, but have come to the conclusion I will find some
secondary sources online about how others feel about Chriss journey and their outlook
on his life and how they compare his actions with their own.
4. What about the 3 discussions/journals/reading reactions so far?
a. Discussion 1: Shitty First Drafts
b. Discussion 2: Understanding Types of writing
c. Discussion 3: Into the Wild
Do you feel these discussions helped you understand the class? The material? Writing in
general? I believe these have helped tremendously with my writing skills. I have read
Shitty First Drafts before, so reading it again and reiterating how important it is to plan
your writing out first has finally set in. Into the Wild has also been a huge eye opener
because of the significant similarities Chris and others his age have, but also the
differences he has that people his age could never imagine doing.
5. Grade Your Progress for above numbers 2 4. Choose one of the following as guided by
the Grading Expectations chart found in Moodle:
Above average I think I have done fairly well in this class with the assignments
because I have done good work although some was a little late or not as complex
or as insightful as I could have made it. But I plan to go above and beyond in the
final e-portfolio to prove that I do want to succeed in this course and actually take
away useful knowledge that you have planned for us to take away!
