In the documentary 30 on 30: The U it consisted of how the sport of football

brought together the city of Miami during a time of crisis and disarray. After
watching the film I saw the new avenue of race, specifically, the African American
culture. Which led to the new idea of analyzing minorities inside of football and how
the sport has become a part of the culture. In the documentary minorities played
street ball at first to escape harsh realities. Coach Stellenberger went to parts of
Florida that were generally unthinkable and recruited African American boys, also to
build up the program again. With terms such as man to man coverage, blitz, MIKE,
4-3 fronts, and matchup zone I had to ask my boyfriend or google what exactly that
meant. Even though most of the black kids grew up in rough neighborhoods, all
these terms were already understood, the play calls and technical terms has to be
learned and implemented into the boys. The students usually played high school
ball, and many of the terms carry over which is how they learned the basics. Most
athletes and teams get their information from past films, games, and coordinators.
This information tells them how to score the ball, who to pass it to, which way to
run, how to defend opponents, etc. Overall the documentary was a good research
outlet, able to show me first hand of the jargon, and the behaviors that are inside of
football. Also able to show me a new type of subculture in the subculture.
