A behavior that is opposed by a society
Throughout the book Every Day the author David Levithan portrays different types of
themes. One of the themes was an idea of homosexuality. In a society, homosexuality is one of
the social issues and it has been considered as a social issue for a long period of time. Instead of
just one, there are actually many reasons to why homosexuality is connected to social issue. The
main reason is as simple as it is. Homosexuality not only influences but is opposed by number of
individuals or group of people. People see homosexuality as a problem and there are various
arguments fighting for whether homosexuality is right or wrong.
Religious reason is one of the factors that influences people to believe that homosexuality
should not be accepted. Christianity as the worlds largest religion has its own beliefs and ideas
which happen to be against the ideas of homosexual people. Christians believe that
homosexuality is not only against God, but also denies the purpose of His creations. By means of
Christianity and Gods Word, homosexuality is considered as destructive behavior that should be
neither tolerated nor forgiven. There is a bible verse that says, You shall not lie with a male as
one lies with a female, it is an abomination. In chapter of Leviticus 18:22. The bible as a source
for Christians to learn and shape their morality, it says a lot about homosexuality as a sin and
against God. Also according to the article, Homosexuality has a heavy judgment administered

by God Himself upon who commit it and support it.(Slick) Considering a bible verse earlier and
many other parts of the bible, it becomes clear that the bible, the Word of God does not support
but condemns homosexuality. As the result of Christians following and believing Gods Word,
homosexuality has been viewed as a problem and sin towards God.
It is hard to deny that Christianity is the worlds largest religion and powerful in terms of
its number and influences within a society. Yet, Christianity as a religion does not give a right to
conclude and decide people that are homosexual. If Christians are truly following the morals of
God according to the bible, they should not judge and evaluate homosexual people just for the
fact that they are homosexual. There is a bible verse that says, Love your neighbor as yourself.
in chapter of Mark 12:31. It says to love not hate. It seems as Christians are only focusing on the
belief that homosexuality is a sin while ignoring other condemned things in the bible. Isnt it also
a sin to hate homosexual people because God told to be loving not hateful? Also according to
the article, If there is no clearly stated directive in the bible to marginalize and ostracize
homosexual people, then it is morally indefensible for Christians to continue to do so. (Shore)
The problem is not the fact that Christians are against homosexuality but the fact that some of
them are using the bible and Gods Word as excuses to hate and detest homosexual people.
Instead of showing abomination, more love and care should be given towards homosexual people
as God commanded that the love is greatest of all in chapter of 1 Corinthians 13:13.
The purpose of marriage is another reason that people oppose homosexuality. In this
society people expect marriage to lead to certain outcome and to fulfill its purpose. Marriage in
peoples mind is a promise between man and woman and leads to reproduction of child which
will eventually form the family. But the problem with homosexual people is that they cant
reproduce and form the same kind of family as heterosexual people do. People think not having

formal or traditional family could negatively influence a child. According to the article,
Children need a real male Father and a female Mother for proper and healthy development
(Watts) This shows that heterosexual parents could provide the best need for a childs life while
what homosexual parents could do is limited. Not only that, another negative influence stated is
that child of same-sex marriage will either lack a mother or a father role model. All these
negative sides of homosexuality are considered to be affecting society and therefore the idea of
homosexuality is not treated so well within a society.
I do not believe homosexuality destroys the purpose of marriage. The purpose of
marriage isnt just producing children and keeping the traditional family structure going.
According to the article, If marriage was only for those who can produce children, then barren
women and sterile men could not marry.(Brentlinger) Following quote shows that marriage is
not only for those who are capable of reproducing but for those who are capable of loving as
well. People say homosexual people cant produce a child but that is not true. There are actually
different kinds of ways to have a child such as surrogacy, In-Vitro fertilization, and adoption.
Also there is an argument that marriage by homosexual people is not best towards a childs
development in terms of growing. Yes, a child might lack either a male father or female mother.
But the most important thing when it comes to raising a child is love and care. Homosexual
parents could show same or even more love and care as heterosexuals and also according to the
article, Studies show little developmental or social difference between children raised by
heterosexual parents and children raised by homosexual parents.(Zorn)
As a matter of homosexuality, I do have to admit that it has both positive and negative
sides in a society. The problem I see is that people in a society have a tendency to only look at
bad sides of homosexuality as if the idea of homosexuality were the worst tragedy that could

occur in a society. People are criticizing and putting homosexual people down in a society. It is
unfair for heterosexual people to forcefully try to change ideas of those people that are
homosexuals. It is ones choice to either agree or disagree with the idea of homosexuality but
affecting homosexual people negatively should not be happening. It is just morally wrong to
show hatred and criticism towards homosexual people because their ideas and beliefs are not the
same as heterosexuals. Not understanding homosexuality is acceptable because not everyone
has the same background life, culture, religion, and environment in which people grew. But
putting homosexual people lower than heterosexual people as human being and judging them
only by the fact they are homosexual should be stopped and discouraged.
