American History Vocabulary Sheet

Things:
1. Political Party: groups of people who share the same political beliefs and try to get
people like them elected to government.
2. Candidate: a person running for a government office.
3. Federalist: political party that supported a strong central government, taxes, a central
bank and war with France. They were lead by Alexander Hamilton and John Adams.
4. Democratic-Republican: political party that supported a weak central government, less
taxes, no central bank, and good relations with France. They were lead by Thomas
Jefferson
5. White House: the place where the President lives. John Adams was the first President
to live there.
6. Cabinet: the Presidents advisors.
7. Foreign Relations: all matters dealing with things not in ones own country. The
opposite of domestic affairs.
8. Delegation: a group of people sent to get something done.
9. Bribe: telling someone you will do something only if they pay you.
10. Neutral: not getting involved in something. Not having an opinion.

People:
1. John Adams: second President of the United States. He wanted peace with France, but
was willing to build up an army in case there was war. He was the first to live in the
White House.
2. Alexander Hamilton: leader of the Federalists. He created the United States banking
and tax system and supported war with France.
3. Thomas Jefferson: leader of the Democratic-Republicans. He lost the 1796 election to
John Adams and became the second Vice President of the United States.
