Dachshunds make for a very reliable and loyal pet to integrate into a family. They
have great personalities and they come in different shapes in sizes for all families. First
off, Dachshunds range in height from about 5 to 9 inches and weigh between 5-32
pounds. The reason this range is so different is because Dachshunds can also be
miniature. Depending on what size dog is perfect for your family, the Dachshund proves
to be quite versatile when it comes to size. Dachshunds generally have short legs, long
bodies and long ears. They are commonly referred to as wiener dogs. Dachshunds
coats can be short and smooth, rough and wiry or long and silky. Generally, a Dachshund
is red-brown or cream, but they do come in two colors too usually being black or brown
with mixes of tan markings.
The Dachshund is also commonly referred to as the badger dog. This name was
given to them because in Germany where they were commonly bred, they were originally
bred to hunt badger, foxes and hares. Dachshunds were trained to dig into these animals
holes or burrows and pull them out. They have strong shoulders and front legs which
makes these dogs perfect for digging during hunting. These dogs also have a strong
sense of smell, which helps them to track down the animal burrows. Their short bodies,
short legs and long tails make them the perfect digging dogs for hunting. They are able
to crawl and fit into small holes and when they are underground, the long tail is visible
from above ground making them easy to spot. The Dachshund is not to be
underestimated by his or her size because despite what some mat think, they are actually
quite valuable when it comes to hunting.
The place of origin of Dachshunds is Germany, although history argues that the
breeds birthplace is a little unclear. It is said that the Dachshund may have descended
from ancient dogs of Egypt or Europe. The reason for this confusion is that a Dachshund
is sometimes called a teckel, which is believed to be an Egyptian name. Others believe
the name is dachel, which is a shortened form of the word Dachshund in German. Long
bodied, short-legged dogs appear in ancient Egyptian drawings but short-legged dogs

have existed in Europe for about 500 years. Regardless of their exact origin, Dachshund
or proof of dogs similar to Dachshunds have been recorded in various places inferring
that the Dachshund breed or of the like have existed for a long time.

The Golden Retriever is sometimes referred to as the all around companion and
sporting dog because of how friendly and versatile it is. The golden retriever leans more
to the big dog category as opposed to little. Their size can be classified as a medium to
large but most characteristics would be considered big. They have big paws, large
hairy coat, wagging tails and lots of energy. They typically weigh between 55-75 pounds
depending on gender. Part of the appeal of the Golden Retriever is the flawless golden
coat. This coat varies is length, texture and color but all naturally beautiful. Some coats
have more of a deep honey look while others can appear to be a light cream color.
Golden Retrievers personalities are strong. They have strong work ethic, a desire
to please, gentle ways and extremely friendly. They are very loyal to owners and lives to
make him or her happy. On top of their great personalities, Golden Retrievers are also
very physically active and energetic. They have a very active lifestyle and enjoy
exercise. With that being said, having a Golden Retriever means commitment to that
daily exercise that they require. To keep this dog looking good, making sure he or she is
physically fit and proper grooming is a must. These dogs are also great for hunting but
having a thick coat that is honey colored does make it difficult for hunters at times.
These dogs make for better guard dogs for the visually impaired because of the easier
training, work ethic and devotion of the dog. All in all, Golden Retrievers make for a
fantastic best friend.
The origin of the Golden Retriever is believed to be Scotland where a passionate
waterfowl enthusiast and sportsman began breeding the Golden dog. The breeding
began in the 1850s where Lord Tweedmouth was adamant on developing a yellow strain

of retrieves. He already knew that the general retriever was a water dog but he wanted
more when it came to the coat of the dog. A Tweed Water Spaniel was presented to Lord
Tweedmouth in the early 1870s. This dog was referred to as a small English Retriever
with a sandy color. This Tweed Water Spaniel was to be the foundation of the yellow
retriever breed or Golden Retriever.

There are many things a parent can do at home in order to be a part of their childs
special education. Learning laws regarding special education and being a part of the
creation of the Individualized Education is not the only important task or step that can be
done to help support the child. There are a variety of ways a parent can support their
child without involving the school. One way is to give your child a calm start to the day.
Meaning make sure that the child is not experiencing stress during the morning like they
will be at school and getting them prepared to be rested and ready to learn when they
arrive. A parent should think about things that may stress their child out and find a way
to eliminate it or make the situation less stressful. Arguing over what clothes to wear or
what to eat is not needed in the morning for children with special needs. This all can
show the child that their parent has respect for school, confidence in their success rate
and overall have a positive outlook on the whole day.
Another way to support the special needs child at home is to make sure he or she
gets enough sleep the night before. Children with special needs have a challenging time
at school doing simple things and answering simple questions so adding a tired factor in
the equation may make the child experience more frustration that usual. Developing a
bed time routine is a good place to begin because for most kids with special needs enjoy

or need a routine in order to keep them moving. Having a good nights sleep can also tie
into having a calm and stress free morning as well. A third way is to go through his or
her backpack daily. This can tell you a lot about the childs day. There may be important
notes and well organized which can indicate a good day or it could be empty which may
indicate an off day when it comes to paying attention. It is also good to check with the
teacher in any questionable situation. Teaching your child good organizational skills
starting with the backpack can pass on to organizing school work and therefore, better
grades and success.
Lastly, but certainly not the last way, memorize your childs schedule. This is a
good way to also teach the child responsibility. Knowing the childs schedule will
eliminate issues of wondering what they did in school or what they learned in class that
day. Also it is good for knowing when therapy was in session in order ot track progress.
A parent can see what subjects he or she is struggling in and relate it back to the time of
day. For instance, the child could be struggling in the end of the day classes because they
are worn out for the day or during a class where the child was interrupted by therapy.
Knowing the childs schedule also creates a gateway for conversation about their day and
what they like and do not like. This is a great way for a parent to be involved, help
discover problems and all and all be an expert on their child.
