LEATHER INDUSTRY OF PAKISTAN


OVERVIEW:
The leather has developed progressively since
Pakistan's independence. following partition from
India, there were few tanneries hides and skin were
imported. Pakistan has a natural advantage in the
area of livestock population, which is major input
(hides &skins) in the leather sector.
Leather and leather products manufactured in
Pakistan have a sizable market both in Pakistan
around the world.

MAJOR BUYERS OF LEATHER AND


LEATHER PRODUCTS:
The leather sector is basically an export oriented sector. Major buyers of
Pakistani leather and leather products are:
Italy
Spain
Portugal
South Korea
Germany
France
UK
USA
Dubai etc.
The recent growth of the industry is mainly due to export of value added
finished leather and leather manufacturers.
The local market of the leather is limited and around 80% of the
production is exported. During 2002-03, the total exports of leather and
leather manufacturers stood at US$ 694 million, which is around 7% of
total exports.

GARMENTS MANUFACTURING:

METHODS OF PRODUCTION OF
LEATHER GOODS: Being an agricultural country, there is abundance of
cattle in Pakistan like cows, buffalo, oxen, camel, goat
etc. the same is the reason that the raw material
(leather) is abundantly available for the leather goods
industry of Pakistan. Due to this favorable
circumstances and conditions the future of leather
good industry has not developed as it should have
been during this period.

the 25-30% is met through
