Puzzle Cube

Intro to Engineering

Overview:
For this project I was assigned to create a puzzle cube by myself. The goal for the puzzle
cube project was to create a 2.25x 2.25 x 2.25 cube using blocks. The blocks were
x x 3/4 in size. I had to have five separate pieces that made the puzzle cube when put
together. Each piece could only have four to six cubes in it and all the pieces added
together could only have a total of 27 cubes. The project took me a little longer than I
expected. I thought that it would only take me about two weeks but instead it took me
three weeks because of some unexpected trial and error. Even though, in the end, the
project was a success.

Materials List:
1. Computer
2. 27 wooden cubes
3. Graph paper
4. Isometric paper
5. Pencil
6. Glue
7. Markers
8. Colored pencils
9. Autodesk Inventor
10. Printer

Procedure:
The first thing I did was brain storm. I grabbed 27 cubes and built the block then I started
constructing pieces. After I created the pieces I drew them out on isometric paper. Then I
created my pieces again by using the cubes. Once the pieces were created I put them
tighter to make sure that they fit together properly and to check to see if they made the
proper shape. Next I Drew my pieces out on isometric paper and colored them the colors
I wanted. I did this for two different cube designs and picked the one I liked the best
using a decision matrix that I created. Once I was done with that I created multi-view
drawings of my pieces on graph paper and dimensioned each piece. Next I drew up my

pieces in Autodesk Inventor. After I created my pieces in Autodesk Inventor I assembled

them together in Autodesk Inventor. Then I took all my pieces and I made a multi-view
drawing of each piece and dimensioned them in Autodesk Inventor. Next I made a multiview drawing of my assembled puzzle cube and dimensioned it using Autodesk Inventor.
Then I made an explosion view of my puzzle cube in Autodesk Inventor. Finally I
exported all of my drawings including my explosion view to canvas.

Concepts Covered:
I covered sketching with the brainstorming and rough draft drawings that I made of the
puzzle cube. I covered dimensioning when I dimensioned all my pieces and puzzle cube
on paper and in Autodesk Inventor. I covered measurements when created my cube to
certain measurements. Finally I covered modeling when I created my pieces and cube in
Autodesk Inventor.

Summary:
One thing this project taught me is that when you are creating something there will be
mistakes and that it is all about trial and error. You just have to keep on it until you get it
right. I had many difficulties with this project. For example you draw something out on

paper then you put it into the computer and it wont work. That is when you have to go
back and figure out what you did wrong, but even with the difficulties though I was able
to complete the tasks that were presented to me. I created a 2.25 x 2.25 x 2.25 puzzle
cube that has only five pieces and each piece had no more than six and had no less than
four cubes. One thing I could have done better was to double check and make sure that all
my pieces I drew out work instead of finding it out later when I put it into the computer.
One thing I did do well though is meeting all the criteria correctly. My project solved the
problem at hand just the way it was suppose to. I met all the criteria and yet, still made a
fun and colorful puzzle cube. In the end, if I were to do this project again I wouldnt do
anything different from what I did because it all came together correctly in the end.
