Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital city of Alava, the province, and of the Basque Country.

Sancho el Sabio de Navarra founded Victoria, in the year 1181 in a hill occuped by the
small village of Gasteiz.
In the 19th century ocurred one oh the most important events in vitoria, the
Battle of vitoria in 1813. In that battle the french soldiery was beaten by Wellington
duke and Alava general. There is a sculpture which remains this battle in the square of
Virgen Blanca. This was a remarkable event in the history of Vitoria- Gasteiz.
From the decade of 1950s, the city experimented a industrialization that
produced a transformation of the city in all aspects, especially in social and
demographic aspects.In the 1960s Vitoria had a very large increase in population.
The year 1980 was very important for Vitoria, because in that year Vitoria became the
capital of the Basque Country.
The last important event of Vitoria was in 2012, when it was named as European
Green Capital.
