What is the History of the city?

Located halfway between Mérida and Cancún, Valladolid, recently named "Magical Town".

Valladolid is the second city in importance of Yucatan and the oldest in the state. It was
founded in 1543 by Francisco de Montejo "El Sobrino" and formerly it was inhabited by the
Cupules in a place known as Chauac Há, part of a Mayan chiefdom. Upon the arrival of the
Spaniards, the lands were divided into encomiendas and the city was placed under the
invocation of the Virgen de los Remedios and the patronage of San Servacio.

Due to the diseases -mainly yellow fever- the city moved to the ruins of the Mayan settlement
of Zaci, which in the Mayan language means "white hawk". During the 19th century, it
became important because it established the first thread and textile factory in Mexico, which
would be the great predecessor of the country's maquiladoras.

What is the current population?

Valladolid has 74, 217 inhabitants: 37, 583 are women and 36, 624 are men. With a
population older than 18 years of age of 46,108; and a greater one, of 60 years of
6,234 people.

What´s the climate like?

The climate is subhumid with regular rains in summer. Its average annual
temperature is 25.7ºC and its average annual rainfall is 79.8 millimeters. Winds from
the southeast and northeast predomínate.

What are the food and lifestyle like?

The yucateca gastronomy stands out for the harmonious combination of the flavors,
colors and fresh smells of limes, oranges, banana, achiote and pumpkin, among
others, which make their typical dishes, worthy representatives of the cultural wealth
of the Mayan East. The cochinita pibil, the lime soup, the motuleños eggs, the
papadzules, the poc-chuc and the corn bread are part of this great culinary legacy.
The lifestyle in Valladolid is characterized by its tranquility and pleasant atmosphere
surrounded by colonial buildings of pastel colors, it is like its local people: gentle,
genuine and kind.
What are the most important sights and activities in the city?

In this Yucatecan town there are many handicrafts, of which stand out the typical
clothing (embroidery, lace, hupile and guayabera), hammocks, jewelry, saddlery and
stone carving. You can buy them at the Craft Market and at the zaci artisan center.

In Valladolid you can find:

 The Parish of San Servacio. The current temple was built in the eighteenth
century.
 To the north is the Church of La Candelaria whose exterior is adorned with a
curious portico of interior arches.
 The most outstanding of the city is the Ex Convent of San Bernardino de
Siena that was formerly the center of the town of Sisal and where the
Franciscans built an imposing convent between 1552 and 1560
 Visit also the san roque museum, which was once a temple of the same name,
and which currently houses a collection of historical and archaeological
pieces from the region.

What is the most important events in the city's history?

Valladolid is the place where two great passages of Mexican history happened:

 The war of castes which had begun in Valladolid with the death sentence of
Manuel Antonio Ay on July 25, 1847
 And the first spark of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, which they celebrate
every year on June 4 with different sports and cultural celebrations.
 Another event that gives Valladolid the adjective Ciudad Heroica was the
episode of D. Carlos R. Méndez that he named "The first spark of the Mexican
Revolution" and that happened on June 4, 1910.
