Thebigideaofstructuresandsystemsisheavilyprevalentinmanyschoolsand
classroomstoday.TheCommonCoreStateStandardsisastructuredsetofstandardsthatthe
childrenareexpectedtomeetattheendoftheyear.Althoughthesestandardscanbeappliedto
subjectssuchasmathandEnglish.Arthasnorealstructuresorsystemsthatartistsmustabide
byinordertocreateart.TheartsteachchildrenthatproblemscanhaveMOREthanONE
solutionandthatquestionscanhavemorethanoneanswer(Eisner,2002).Inartarethereare
noboundariesorlimitsorrulesthatyoumustabideby.Artistscanstructuretheirartworkina
certainwayandfollowdifferentsystemsbutartitselfislimitlessandfree.
AsateacherIwouldalwaysapplyathemeorspecificconceptforeachclass.Thiswould
helpstudentsbrainstormandexpandontheirideas.Itisimportantasateachertoprovide
examplesandmodelsforthechildrenwiththeintentofthembroadeningtheirknowledgeofart.
Structureintheclassroomisgreatwhenteachersuseittoencouragechildrentotakerisksand
explorewithdifferentsuppliesanddifferentstylesofart.Ifeelitisinappropriateasateacherto
forcestudentstofollowaspecificstructureduringtheiropenstudiotime.AsateacherIwould
splitmystudentsintosmallgroupsandthenhaveeachgroupcomeupwithaproject.Within
theirgrouptheywouldcomeupwithanartprojectandchoosehowtostructureit.Thisisa
greatwayforstudentstounderstandtheuseofstandardsandsystemsinart.
