Philosophy (Mindset for Practice): According to Dweck (2006) our beliefs

about how we make sense of the world makes a huge difference in how we
respond to challenges, and therefore, how we succeed in life. In the cartoon,
Popeye and his group allow their beliefs about spinach to influence their way of
life. This includes his view of the vegetable and Popeyes impulse to impose his
mindset on others. The cartoon also demonstrates that Popeyes mindset is fixed
rather than growth oriented, No one can convince me that you are not the best
power packed gourmet! says Popeye. Consequently, he will tend to avoid
challenges, avoid change, and avoid admitting to and fixing his mistakes
(Dweck 2006) or misconceptions about spinach.
Popeyes mindset is that spinach is the best power-packed gourmet. According
to Lewin (n.d), a nutritionist, spinach is well known for its nutritional qualities
and has always been regarded as a plant with remarkable abilities to restore
energy, increase vitality and improve the quality of the blood. Therefore, in
Popeyes reality and that of many others, research has proven that spinach is
indeed an energizer. This knowledge has impacted on Popeyes and his groups
values which in turn has strongly influenced their mindset. The website
goodfood.com posits sound reasons why spinach would have such remarkable
results, primarily the fact that it is rich in iron. Iron plays a central role in the
function of red blood cells which help in transporting oxygen around the body,

in energy production and DNA synthesis. Spinach is also an excellent source of

vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C and folic acid as well as being a good source of
manganese, magnesium, iron and vitamin B2.
While Popeye may or may-not have been aware of this scientific evidence he
may have developed this theory based on his experience or rate of practice.
When faced with challenges the one eye sailor would pop a can of spinach and
his biceps and muscles would bulge and he would get powers to always
overcome his enemies. Consequently, he developed his theory since his
experiences with the phenomena was relevant to his context. Although Science
may view Popeyes perspective on Spinach to be over-inflated; Popeye believes
strongly in his personal philosophy that he postulates; that no one can convince
him that spinach is not the best power-packed gourmet.
His accepted belief that Spinach is the best power-packed gourmet guides his
internal conduct, in that, he professes that he will use his power to ensure that
spinach is cherished by all members of the team. He is unwavering and steadfast
in his belief and is willing to impose it on other members of his community. We
all have a set of core values from which we view the world and interact with
others within our spheres of life. Our core values shape our interactions, how
we see the world around us, what we value and treasure most and the decisions
we make in life.
