Homework Set 1
Due 9/21/2015, 11:00am
1. The following three reactions take place in a constant volume reactor at constant temperature.
A+B C+D
Reaction (1)
A+C E
Reaction (2)
EG
Reaction (3)
Write down the rate expression for each species and write down the equations in terms of the time
derivatives (you should get 6 rate expressions). Also, write down the point selectivity expressions for
each of the products.
2. Solve problem 1.3 from your book.
3. Solve Problem 1.4 from your book.
4. Solve Problem 1.10(b) from your book.
5. For the three component, reversible reaction we have worked in class (Wei-Prater Analysis example),
find the concentration expressions if we only have (1) pure A2, and (2) pure A3 initially in our reactor.
Plot how the mole fractions of three species change with time on the same graph and determine the
time required to reach about 50% of equilibrium conversion.
6. Use the transformation method described in Kittrell, Mesaki, and Watson [Industrial and Engineering
Chemistry 58 (1966)] and your favorite nonlinear regression computer program to obtain the best
reaction order and rate constant for the data provided in HW1_Problem6_Data.xlsx. Compare the
results.
