The Setting
The Plot

The action of the plays takes place in various locations in

the Grammar School the classroom, the Staff Room,
Headmasters Office.
There will be a 15 minute interval between Acts I and II.

Set in a fictitious, 1980s Sheffield Grammar School, The

History Boys centres itself around the plight of eight teenage boys who are trying to gain admission to Oxford and
Cambridge. Having all received exemplary A-Level results,
they stay on at school for the first term of the following
year to prepare for entrance exams. The action of the play
follows the boys strife to become more rounded human
beings under the eccentric guidance of teacher, Hector,
and to become savvy, sophisticated historians under the
new teacher, Irwin.

Alan Bennett was born in Leeds, the son of a co-op butcher. He attended both Cambridge and Oxford, from where
he graduated with a first-class degree in History. He is one
of the most decorated playwrights in recent British theatre.
He has written for stage, radio and both the big and the
small screen. His writing credits include the Talking
Heads series for the BBC as well as The Madness of King
George, for which he received an Oscar nomination. The
History Boys won three Laurence Olivier Awards in the
West End in 2005 and also won six Tony Awards on Broadway. The play was also made into a movie and released in
2006.
