The Play

The Cast

in order of appearance

set in 1912, the story unfolds in

the English country estate of
the snobbish Chichester family
who have just learned that they have
been pauperised by the failure of their
bank. Poverty is averted by the arrival
of an uncultured but pretty and bright
Irish cousin, Peg OConnell. Peg, unknown to herself, has been left a fortune in which the Chichesters will
share, but only if they undertake to
teach her to be a lady. Things get
complicated when the gentlemen
around her begin to express a romantic interest in her. What ensues includes conflict, romance and lots of
laughter!

eg O My Heart opened in
New York on December 21st
1912. It was an instant success
and became one of the all-time long
run hits of the stage. For the author, J.
Hartley Manners, it made a fortune
and for his actress wife, Laurette Taylor, it made her a star. The play had
over 600 consecutive performances
on Broadway and five touring companies were on the road for several
years with it. In 1921, there was a
Broadway revival and in 1933 it was
made into an MGM motion picture
starring Marion Davies in the leading
role. Sligo Drama Circle previously
staged hugely successful productions
of the play in 1980 in the Town Hall
and in 1982 in the Hawks Well Theatre.

The Playwright
J Hartley Manners (18701928), was born in London of Irish parentage and worked there as an actor.
He emigrated to New York where he became known as a writer of comedies and romantic dramas. Manners
was regarded as a confirmed bachelor when, late in life, he unexpectedly married Laurette Taylor, a struggling young actress with two young children. He set himself the task of writing a vehicle for his wifes talents. The result, which exceeded all expectations, was Peg O My Heart.
