Description
A business card for a hair styling business created
in InDesign, using a logo Created in Illustrator.

Objectives
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal
image. Do not imitate existing logos or use
previous designs. Use the new logo to design
consistent layouts for a business card. Apply
typography rules, keeping small copy.

Process
I first started out by creating the logo for
Chelsea Hair Artistry in Adobe Illustrator, which
I gathered inspiration for on Pinterest. It was fun
taking an image of scissors and tracing it with the
pen tool for the logo. I created the business card
and letterhead in InDesign. I Basically just used
the rectangle tool, an image, the type tool, the line
tool, and the logo to create both designs. I wanted
to have repetition in my designs by adding the
strips of hair. I was really pleased with how it turned
out and I think the strips of hair make the message
pretty clear. On the letterhead I moved the business
in formation to the bottom right corner to increase
visual flow. Later, I changed the font on the card.

Description
Brochure project showcasing my skills in InDesign.

Objectives
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four
quality images, not including the logo. One should be
clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign
so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least
three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders. Trim for
a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process
Creating this brochure was kind of a long
process. I first had to create the logo which
I created in Illustrator. I used a pretty simple
design for that. Then I had to Create the trifold layout in InDesign. I used guides to help me
divide it. I then started inserting images and
text. I used paragraph styles to help keep the
text the same. I also used text-wrap to wrap my
text around the image of the rifle.

Objectives
Learn basic photography skills.Choose a color
scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then
incorporate the colors into the layout.

Process
I first chose the color scheme and went to this
charming little farm in archer and decided I
could make an analagous color scheme with the
pumpkins and the barn. I positioned my camera
so that the bucket wasnt dead center in the
picture, and I made sure that the pumpkins were
in focus. When editing the image in photoshop,
I slightly adjusted the levels since I was already
liking the lighting, it looked very natural. The
selective color function was very useful because
the pumpkins were a little too yellow and I wanted
to make them more gold to fit the color scheme. I
chose a font that I thought fit well with the theme,
something kind of cute and quaint so I went with
castellar. I thought it kind of gave it a rustic look
which I liked. I incorporated the brick and the gold
into the fonts and then incorporated the orange
into the border and the lines around the part that
says pumpkins for sale. I also thought the orange
lines created repetition.

Description
A web page designed to present a logo I created.

Objectives
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a
web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating
your logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. Acquire a
working knowledge of CSS. Identify hex colors to
match logo, using Photoshop color picker.

Process
Using Notepad++ I marked up all my content in
an HTML document for this web page. To style
the webpage I inserted a link to an external
CSS document. In the CSS document I changed
background colors, font families, text colors, section
sizes, and font sizes. I also added the background
image in the CSS document. After I was finished I
validated both my CSS and HTML on W3Schools. Any
errors that it found I would go back to the code and
correct. When I made corrections I got rid of the
underlining of the description of the Web Page.

Description
A Logo designed in Illustrator.

Objectives
Create three completely different, original logos to
fit a company or personal image that will appeal to
the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use
previous designs. Market research: gather opinions
from at least ten people about which logo appeals
most to them. Use only the Illustrator tools to
create and draw your logos. Refine one logo with
variations for color.

Process
I started out by making several sketches. I produced
three of them and then chose one to focus on.
I used Illustrator to design these logos. I didnt
have to use very many tools I used the line tool,
rectangle tool, ellipse tool, pen tool, path erase tool,
and the type tool. I wanted to put the emphasis on
the word design so I used a bolder weight and put
it in all caps. I wanted their to be some asymmetry
and wanted to balance every aspect of the design.
I chose a font that was very simple but elegant and
I adjusted the kerning in between the letters and
also adjusted the leading between the lines so that
theyre further apart. I added repetition in my logo by
creating an icon that makes the letters R, H, D, and
N which all stand for Rachel Horton Design.

Description
An Event Ad I created using Word.

Objectives
Comprehend image sizing. Find, scan and import
a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for
your message and audience.Learn to use only Word
design features without using any Adobe programs,
including Photoshop.

Process
I created this ad using Word alone. I first chose
the message I wanted to convey and then chose
an image that would elegantly fit with the event.
I then scanned the image. Then I started creating
sketches and looked on pinterest for some ideas.
What I ended up doing was having the image in the
background of the whole flier and inserting a box
over two thirds of the picture (following rule of thirds)
and then made the fill of the box orange and a little
transparent to ad the cool effect of having pumpkins
faintly behind it all. I chose a monochromatic color
scheme of oranges, since I already have the image of
pumpkins and it creates the fall festival kind of feel.
I then chose white text for the whole ad because it
looked the most elegant. I bolded some of the text to
follow the principle of hierarchy, and I changed the
kerning for almost all the text to make it more legible.

Description
Project using Photoshop, incorporating blending using
masks, with a spiritual message.

Objectives
Learn to blend two or more images together
gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced
Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements.
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the
image.Apply typography principles.

Process
I designed this project in Photoshop. I used three
images, one being a texture and I blended them
together using a mask tool. I first made a sketch
of what I wanted based on the quote that I used,
then I found the images. After blending the images
I applied a couple of filters, the grain filter I applied
on the whole image, the texturize filter I applied to
everything surrounding the faces. I chose Bell MT font
for my text and changed the weights in certain places
to add emphasis. I put a bevel and emboss application
on the text to make it fit the design a little better, I
feel like it kind of gave it an older feel.

Description
Objectives
Apply the design principles and use appropriate
typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to
improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo
from links on this page. Create a project folder with
image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in
InDesign intact.

Process
I used several boxes in my design and I added
different fill colors in each box. In one of them I
changed the opacity so you could see the picture
behind it. I also used the line tool. And of course, I
used several textboxes for my title and body copy. I
also wanted to make it somewhat asymmetrical but
of course balanced. Before creating my design I went
on to Pinterest to get my creative juices flowing. Then
I did four sketches of potential designs. After I had
a couple of people critique my draft, I got rid of the
widows and orphans in my design and broke up the
text a little more to make it easier to read. I also made
sure to contrast the text color with the background, to
make certain things pop and to make it easier to read.
