Disaster Sciences
The Wasatch Mountain
Range is caused by a
vertical fault. This
causes the mountains to
raise higher as the
valley moves downward.

A magnitude 6 earthquake
or greater on the fault
could cause a surface
rupture. Such ruptures
break up ground surface
and can cause damage
hundreds of feet from the
fault rupture.

Disaster sciences
An uncommon but likely
disaster is Yellowstone
Supervolcano. Underneath
its National Park is a
volcanic hotspot.

One recent study

estimates that another
supervolcanic eruption at
Yellowstone would cover
North America in ash.
Supervolcanoes can also
have pronounced cooling
effects on the climate
because the sulfur
dioxide blocks incoming
sunlight.
