    William McKinley was born in 1843 and attended college to become a school teacher. He joined the Union army during the Civil War and became a brevet major for volunteers. After the war, McKinley studied law, married Ida Saxton, and entered politics as a Republican in 1869, eventually winning the 1896 presidential election. As president, McKinley was initially reluctant to intervene in Cuba's fight for independence from Spain but declared war on Spain in 1898 after the USS Maine was destroyed in Havana harbor.

    MILITARY LIFE BEGINS

    McKinley sided with union army


    Became a brevet major for volunteers

    CAREER

    After the war McKinley studied law


    And married Ida saxton
    But before she died he catered her

    POLITICS YEARS

    McKinley entered politics in1869


    And became a republican in congress
    And won the 1896 election
    ( had two terms as a president = 8 years)

    THE WAR

    The us wanted interfere with Cuba and Spain but McKinley did no want to intervene
    So when the U.S.S man was suppose to be blown by Spain
    Enraged McKinley declared war on Spain
